I am looking to buy a kayak (finally...I know...) and lately have seen a lot of Ocean Kayaks FRENZYs out there for like 250 bucks (usually includes paddle+seat).
I am seriously considering buying one because the price is so affordable. And just to have something of my own. And just to get on the water.

Is this a good idea? Should I spend 250 on a Frenzy?
Or should I keep borrowing kayaks from friends (Thanks Mahito!) until I find a nicer model / save enough for a nicer model? I know the Frenzy isn't the best yak out there. Does anyone here fish from one?

Thank you in advance,
PK

I've test paddled one at the REI demo (I'm also a former employee) - they're not the best, but it will get you to the nearby kelpbeds for rockfish. It's also a good yak to use if you plan to drift down a river. I've also heard that it's a good surf yak (never tired it myself).

So, if your in a hurry to get some fishing done on a yak = IMO, this would be your best bet. But if I were you, I'd save up for something that will take me out further with less effort.

Just my 2 cents :smt002

Good luck and welcome to the madness :smt003

PK I am speaking with very little experience. But something a little longer then 9 feet might make for a more pleasant and longer experience/trip. If you are not bothered by motion sickness I guess it does not matter. Randall

. Rosemary felt a powerful jolt and flew off the top of her boat. Rick saw a shark perhaps 16 feet long knock the boat entirely out of the water, and he believes Rosemary flew 12 to 14 feet into the air. Rosemary landed in the water, and briefly felt something solid underfoot. She thinks she landed on the shark

....I guess that why they call it the "FRENZY"  :smt002

I had a Frenzy as a loaner yak, bought it for $250 and sold it for $200 + a few upgrades. As long as the hull doesn't look too beat up, buy it, use it, pass it onto someone else. You won't lose much money on it, if any and you'll save kayak rental costs until you figure if you want to invest more money into the sport.

WOW!
At first I thought the article was current...then saw the Newsletter date---1993. There seems to be a lot of white shark activity this year too.
Didn't know OK had been making the Frenzy for so long...thought it was a kinda new model. Now that I know they have been making them for so long, I'm less inclined to purchase that model---means those Frenzys listed on craigslist, etc may be way older than I suspected.

I'll probably pass on this one. I need something a little bigger anyways...I'm only like 40lbs short of the weight limit for frenzy anyways...just noticed that!

Thanks for all the quick responses everybody!

An x-calibur spittin image, chug bug, or possibly a hula-popper...under 12 feet and big blue are simply not my personal choice for a safe and sane combo.  I saw a lady way off shore in some cheapo sports mart thingy with a downward sloping bow????  Yikes!
