Thank you for the replies. :smt001 My wife actually now tells me her meeting is in San Luis Obispo .  I map quested and it looks like Avila beach is the place. Should I fish straight out by the Red X?? :smt044

If you follow the beach contour from Avila south-east towards Pismo, you will see a wash rock (Avila rock?), it is part of a triangular shaped shallow reef. Most kayakers target this reef for rockfish and and in the summer, halibut. Work this reef with shrimp flies tipped with bait or small swim baits. Do not head north west around the point. It can get gnar out there and is not a place unless you are an experienced ocean kayaker. It is a very nice kayak fishing area and personally would not pay to fish on a party boat. North of Morro is Cayucos. This can be more of a surf launch but flat on other days. There is lots of shallow structure west and north. Try to hook up with Rhyak's crew. Really great guys.

OK, so I hit up patriot sport fishing for a half day excursion. Wish I could have written it has a great experience. View and boat ride was excellent. :smt001

First four stops were a bust. Young captain. Not sure if he was the regular. The few fish that were caught were small olives. Then we went on a hunt to find fish. motored around and paused several times just to take off and find another spot. In my opinion. It was almost like he was just scouting., We had about 20 minutes left and we motored to a spot where the captain was adamant about telling us we would only be doing one drop and that we would be going in after the ONE drop. And to my amazement , we were on big fish. a couple of people scored on 3 nice vermillion and one nice yellowtail. Hummm??

I don't think there was one limit on the boat :smt013. It was just strange on how the day unfolded.

When we returned to the pier. I stopped at the cleaning station and saw several guys from two small private boats. 15 and 16 footers with limitis of large cod as well as big lincod.  :smt002 Hummm  ??? makes ya wonder. And they were done at 11 am

Well the moral of the story is.... :smt003

There was some good out of the adventure. It was a beautiful day. Caught 4 decent yellow tail and gathered some great intel from the area.. Dropped by the boat launch. They hoist your boat with a sling. Found a great place to launch the kayak. And I know there is some great fishing there !!!. Those small sport boats didn't go far. I bought a map from there. It shows some great structure.

There is a great little town there, golfing and fishing. What more can you ask for.  But, I am not gonna invite that guy who was crying when I posted the golf bag on sale and said he was gonna get kicked out of his house and need a place to stay if he took up golf. :smt044.

All and all it was a great day. The thing that bothers me is that we have such good fishing here in the Monterey Bay. Why would I want to torture my self and lug either my kayak or a boat 2 and a half hours away. lol Guess its in our Dna to explore. :smt003

It was a great day all in all though Ryan. The positive experiences did out way the not catching as many fish as I wanted.  :smt044. To be honest with you..... I can hardly wait to get back there. By the way. Enjoyed the hell out of the Cambria Slam down 2. Caught a nice set coming  into the launch that catapulted me what seemed to feel like all the way to the bridge. Yes !! Cawabunga !! My first big set beach landing. Was a rush :metal.

I am actually trying to rig up my first set of kayak pads to my ride right now. I am thinking of heading back there before the end of the month. Wont be anyone to blame if I don't catch this next time!! :smt003

SLO has some excellent fishing for rockfish, lings and halibut. sometimes  :smt002

bummer on your experience, but glad you see the bright side of it. I've heard other such hit-or-miss reports from the Patriot, but that could just be timing. Sometimes even the best of the best have a tough time getting on the fish.

We went on an all day trip and we all limited out. The young captain did well by us. I think the 1/2 day boat isn't as good. Next time bring the yak and launch MDO. There are some nice lings there.

Wow,,,  yellowtail ???       How far offshore  and what were you catching them on?     I've launched at the stairs just down the street from CCK store.    good rock fishing everywhere there.

I mean yellow tail as in olive rock fish. There were just out and north. not to far out and suspending about 30 to 40 feet off the bottom in about 200 feet of water. The map I picked up shows great structure to the north and south. By the way the small private boats did great. It looks like great fishing somewhere close. :smt003
