Hey, so I've gotta go back to work in mid August, but have been thinking about tubing down a river with a case of beer. I've heard of areas near Truckee and Sacramento, but nothing in detail. I'm not looking for rapids just a nice float.

Anyone having any specifics? Maybe a place to rent a tube and a spot to coast down a river?

Thanks in advance :smt006

The American river out of Coloma (camp Lotus) is worth looking into. This is near Folsom.
The American river between The lake Natoma dam and discovery park near sacramento
The Moklumne river from the fish hatchery off of hwy 12 to the mackville bridge. This is east of lodi no rentals, can be very low water, but nice and peaceful and relaxing.
Honey run near centerville (Chico area)
Research all three locations they all have promise. Enjoy!

Knights Ferry east of Oakdale. River Journey has rafts to rent.
2-3 hr. float down the Stanislaus river. Weekends I think they have shuttle to bring you back to where you launched from.
pack it in pack it out.

American River is the place, lot's of fun.
you can bring a kayak if someone can pick you up at Watt ave or you can rent a tube or buy your own and pay 5.00 for the buss ride back to the place when you are done. Make sure you know where they are picking people up.

If you really mean tubing, as opposed to rafting or using an inflatable kayak (IK), then the aforementioned Truckee and lower American are the best options I can think of. Most other rivers that aren't too difficult to tube, are cold enough to require wetsuits if you are going to be immersed all day.

The S.F. American from Coloma to Greenwood creek is an easy to raft or IK class II run with the best shuttle logistics in the area. However, it's not really a " bring a case o beer and tube" run. I've personally pulled a guy in a K-mart coffin out of the willows just below Coloma. He was cold and exhausted, and damned lucky we came along.

The lower Yuba is another possibility, but while it fishes well, the scenery is pretty sucky, and the water a bit chilly for tubing. Logistically, a shuttle there is as easy as it gets, if you take out at Sycamore Park. One thing you really, REALLY don't want to do is miss Sycamore, continue on in bliss and go over Daguerre dam. People die there on a regular basis...  Just pay attention, and don't drink a case of beer.

I've had some beer-fueled tubing adventures down the Arroyo Seco river and the Big Sur river. Carmel too but it's dry now. No fishing allowed right now, but the Big Sur is easily accessible and you can float all the way down to the ocean (there are some shallow stretches where you have to walk though fyi).

If you want to do the Moke in Lodi, contact Dan at the headwaters. Lots of people have done that float based out of his shop and you can rent a kayak if you want to go that route.
