first of all, thanks to all of you for your support over the years. i had to cut way back because of family concerns, but i am hoping to get my house, well, actually it's mostly my garage, in order and start posting and working on reels again.  the short story is that my father-in-law took a bad fall four years ago.  my wife and i have been providing 24/7 care since then. he suffered a severe subdural bleed AND worsening parkinson's disease.  he finally passed away this last may at the age of 94.  my mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer in october of last year and she passed away at christmas.  so basically, we lost them both within 5 months.

it's been almost 2 months and we are getting their house all cleared out. the first order of business is to clear out the backlog of reels that i still have, then get out do some fishing. as far as reel repair goes, i am still doing some, with help from jim nomura, bryan young, jonathan han and roger shu.  these guys have been a tremendous help for the last 4 years.  it would not have been manageable without them.

Sorry to hear that about the family Alan. I hope all will be as well as possible, as soon as possible.
Please let us know when you are back in the business....after you get some fishing in of coarse.

I learned a lot from Alan.  And all the credit goes to him for teaching me (with his tutorials and answering e-mail) how to service all my reels.

For a guy who made money repairing reels to be so open about how to do it spoke a ton to his character.

That all said it really isn't all that difficult.  Sure there is a nervousness factor, but everyone here can do it.

Using Alan's knowledge I switched out all of my reels to wet carbon drags.  So freaking awesome.

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I hope this isn't considered a threadjack...  but since we're on the topic does anyone know if Cals "Carbontex Grease" is the one to use on HT100 washers?  There are a couple different types of Cals grease and I want to make sure I ordered the right one.

By the way, even though I've been afraid to open up the 'guts' of my reels and do some real (dammage) cleaning, just performing a cleaning of the line guide, spool, and inner body of my reels has made them a hell of a lot better than they were.  Unfortunatly two of mine have some other issues i'm going to have to try and diagnose.  But it's hard for someone that hasn't ever even tried to identify parts in a reel to know what's going wrong.  I love Alan T.'s tutorials though!  I've spent a few days now reading them and comparing what i've done to my reels, he makes it look pretty easy (until you read his suggested list of tools!  :smt044 )!  I'm now about to venture into the unknown and take apart my Abu Record C3 'guts' and see if I can fix the spool engagement issue I'm getting randomly.  :smt012

Eric -

I have a HUGE tub of Cals grease. I can bring some for you to PIF if you want. PM me if interested.

Good luck with that!
About 5yrs ago, I sent my Abu 7000i to Alan for cleaning & drag upgrade. Came back wonky and freespool didn't work, even with 6ozs (unless I physically pulled line out by hand). So I let it sit in my garage for a few yrs, then tried to fix it myself. It is currently a pile of parts sitting in the box. Bummer because it was my favorite reel for a while. Now I need to have someone fix it for me.
Also, it turns out my Revo Toro got toasted by the thresher a month ago...handle spins but the spool won't engage. So i probably need to figure out how to fix that one too.

What?!  You didn't buy that awesome boat with reel repair cash?  :)

At any rate, I salute you for your contributions.

PS:  No wonder my viagra is so damn expensive..... lol.
