There are times when working deeper depths require heavier jigs. Not always weather dictated.

I mentioned that in my next post... its true of course.  When working out toward the limit beyond 100ft a heavy jig can be nice.  I try to stay shallower than that if the fish are cooperative just so they don't suffer barotrauma.

Man, I have fished jigs in 200+ depth from my kayak a lot. And I have never needed 8ozs. Only time I ever use something that heavy from my yak is with those 12" Kalins because the hooks aren't big enough on regular 4-6oz leadheads...so I have to use 8oz heads. If I was looking to stock up on diamond jigs, I'd go for 3, 4, 5 ozers. The 8-12ozers are for boat fishing.

And... purchase the kind that have big single hooks, not trebles.  Damn things just get you hung up all the time.  Another tip... get some colored tubing (something like heat shrink for wires or thin walled surgical tubing) and thread it onto the hook so that is extends down past the bend in the hook.  When jigging it will hit first causing the hook to lay over... which will keep your hook out of little nooks and crannies.  It drastically reduces snags.

Like Pat I use lighter jigs 2-3oz unless If I am fishing past 120'. I like to fish the kelp and there is little need for heavy weight there.

Spent some days fishing 240' and you will need some weight especially if you use a teaser above your iron. The 7-16oz jigs were preferable partially due to the decreased time the rig takes to reach bottom from the heavier weight. The heavies also catch bigger RF and most importantly lessen the scope of your drop if there is any current at all. I would tend to agree though that deep water RF are more of a PB game.
