Thank you, I'll look into it. I'm contemplating the humminbird 597ci HD di combo, but this is a steal. Any thoughts?

It's a good deal. They're probably on sale now because the rebate deal ended 4/7 (for $100 back). I got mine for $430 w/Navionics gold a few weeks ago...sent rebate form last week. However, so far I'd have to rate my experience with this FF as poor. I've deployed the transducer on a pvc arm directly in the water AND inside the hull using duct deal...and not satisfied with either. Granted, the pvc trial was in the ocean trolling for salmon in 320FOW. So results are still pending. :-)

Thank you. Yeah, there is no 2D on the Low. Does the Bird get you deep enough in the ocean? I figure it does, but just asking. Did you do a through hull or scupper mount?

The Lowrance Elite 4 & 5 units are offered in either a "standard" broadband sounder OR a DSI.  Currently, only the Elite 7 offers the best of both worlds; Broadband AND DSI in one transducer.  If used within it's designed parameters, the Elite 4/5 DSI unit will show strands of kelp and structure in high detail ... as well as the fish that inhabit them.  When used outside of their operational parameters, it's hard to expect the unit to perform, comparitively, to a standard/broadband sounder.  The best comparison is to ask someone to pump a lot of bass sound out of a high clarity tweater (good analogy for anyone out there who listens to music).  The DSI works on a high frequency; up to 800 kHz.  That frequency is ment to show high clarity, but not deep.  To go deep, you need to be in the 50/83 or 200kHz range (depending on what you call deep) which is what a standard/broadband sounder produces.

Hard to beat a 5" color GPS/Sounder for $379.  This is a great unit for lake trolling, delta fishing & anyone targeting fish/structure in, say, under 100 FOW.
