There isn't a lot of access down there but you can launch from Kirk creek, Limekiln, or Willow creek. Limekiln is a state park w/day use fees but the other 2 are free.

Can you roll a kayak down to Sand Dollar Beach to launch.  I used to hang glide there, but don't remember the path to the beach too well.  We would usually land on the bluff above the beach.  It is a very pretty area, and looking down into the clear water from 800' up was a blast.  You could see the submerged rocks easily.

I like that spot but it's not for everyone. Hauling your kayak and all your gear up all the stairs from the beach is brutal. I've had more than one friend say they never wanted to do that again.

I've got a spot on the southern side. A bit of a tough launch at times but the fishing is great. Honestly couldn't say how to get there as its just a pull off the rode. You should e spend some time looking for a spot or two if you can. Ill post a hook up this summer.

The stairs to Sand dollar are brutal. I wouldn't recommend carrying your kayak up & down there.

The spot I go to is pretty hard too. Not sure of the name but there's a beach close to shore with a bunch of rocks ad a tunnel you can go through from the backside.

Yeah Sand Dollar SUCKS. Did that once but was only 19 at the time.
Let's just say down is not an issue. Up sucks.

The one your talking about is not bad at all in comparrison to sand dollar.

With out sounding like a a$$, I want to say if your asking for gimmies for Big Sur you probably will not get them. Your best bet is to recon with some buddies and learn the launches. Like Pat said the known spots are Limekiln, Mill, and Willow going from North to South.

Big Sur is one of the wildest, excluded parts of the state. Stay with friends and have proper equipment should be considered a must.

Good luck if you make it out.

Ryan

I would launch at Mill and head south if conditions permit. It is the easiest of the launches although a full on surf launch. The surge goes way up the beach so rig your boat close to the cliff. Your on your own down there so if things go bad help is a long time coming. 3 people is probably the minimum number for safety. The commercial guys have hammered the area so don't be surprised if it is a scratch bite. Oh and Lucia is pretty sharky. Limekiln has a brutal steep shorebreak and a ranger who isnt fond of kayakers. Willow has some decent surfing, popular with spearos, and the most sharky of the 3. Garapata has a long portage, tough surf and is sharky. The BS scenery is great though and worth the trip. Like Ryan said, most of the guys who fish sur aren't going to invite tag-alongs. The reason is not to protect secret fishing holes but because most don't want the risk of fishing with someone with unknown experience and equipment.

Good luck and be safe. Scott

Note that with launching/landing from Mill Creek, I advise that you do so at low tide. At high tide, the waves are crashing against your only access to the beach and it is quite hairy carrying your yak and gear to the launch site. Immediately to the left of you are rocks and you do not want the waves to push you into them. Also, the waves are sneaky there. A few sets are quite flat and then you get a monster one out of now where.

Scott is dead on.  A lot of people have drowned there.  I watched a relatively prepared kayaker nearly die. Luckily I had my eagle eye on him. I would not go weak or out of shape either.  The fishing is pretty incredible.
