Haven't done many forums before so I'll try again. My name is Rick (rickashay52). Live in Reno and came down on 2/25/13 to fish the delta. Started at Sherman Island at the wind surfers park on the Sacramento river side. It is pretty primitive no power or water. Fished that area for 3 days. Caught a few fish (stripers and sacramento pike), nothing of any size. Had to move so we t drop our holding tanks in the trailer and get more water. On 3/1/13 we ended up at Eddos Marina and RV park. Its on the San Joaquin River side of Sherman Island. The first day I hooked 4 fish 1 striper @ 24 inch the other 3 I lost. I was trolling rattle traps with a 8 ft. kokanee rod lot of fun but no back bone. The next day I switched rods and was using a 8-1/2 ft salmon rod with Shimano reel. Got lucky and hooked the steelhead, don't have a scale but he had to be 20 plus lbs.  Trolled this morning 3/3/13 the wind came up and it was time to head home. That's my fish story take it for what it is. Had a great time. My goal here is to meet some of you kayakers from the sac area to fish with. I would like to fish the delta, bodega bay and SF bay.

Uhh... That fish has an adipose fin.

Before fishing California again I would suggest taking another look at steelhead vs salmon identification, and reading up on steelhead regulations.  From this pic it looks like you kept an illegal fish.

+1

I was hinting at that in this thread as well, with the black vs. white gums comment.

Welcome Rickshay, and thanks for sharing the report. Great catches, and I like the picture with the kid in the kayak!

You might also want to read up on how to handle fish that are to be released.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Nice fish! Way to come to the delta and catch a handful of different species. Im planning a trip to Pyramid at the end of the month with a few other yakers if you want to come fish and chill send me a PM. you too if your interested Jude.

Also if anybody has any advice your willing to share about yak fishing the lake I would love to hear it. Im getting ready to place a small tackle order for the trip and not sure what to get. Other than it can get real windy and be ready for HUGE cutts I dont know much else.

I catch most of my fish using a down rigger with a 3 lb. weight. I use torpedoes, flat fish, u-20 and apex lures. Pyramid is a big lake almost as big as Tahoe and the lake can get real windy. I have seen it go from a little chop to 4-5 foot swells in 30 minutes. the closest zip code for a weather report is 89510 it comes up as Reno but it is actually Sutcliffe at pyramid lake. It has a bar, store and rv park. You can get tackle and fishing lic. there. Pyramid Lake is on an indian res. so you need their permits and they have a web site so you can get all that stuff online(www.pyramidlake.us). With the fishing lic you can access the lake without a day permit no boat permit is needed for a kayak. I advice that you review the website for the rules and regs. as they seem to change. The east side of the lake is closed. We can only fish the west side of the lake.

What are the regs on hatchery steelhead now? Because I heard they are changing...and you will be allowed to keep em again.
