I always:

1) Go to bed Sunday night with a full tank of gas.  Its that last 10-15 miles before empty, on a thursday afternoon, where you're running late to an appointment and think, "can i make it?"  Been on the wrong end of that question a time or two.  :jerk:

2) pack a pair of running shoes, sox, and gatorade lol :jerk: :jerk:

I think a better question is: How far can you go BEFORE the gas light turns on?
My buddy's Escape Hybrid has a digital "Miles Until Empty" gauge and with a full tank it says like 700 miles to empty! It kinda makes me want to get a hybrid!

I've found what the reserve mileage is in the manual.
Have had my idiot light burn out on my last car.
Found out the hard way not to fully trust any mechanical device.

Soooo, The Fuel pump unit uses the fuel to lubricate and cool itself.... If you run the tank till low or empty you could burn that baby up.... Some fuel pump assy's cost $2-300.00 some more!!!! Add labor and you see a $700.00 oops moment.... Fill that bad boy (fuel injected) up! Last 1/4 tank start looking to fill it up. Just like oil changes are important, so is fuel in the tank. Costs less to fill it up if you don't wait till it's sucking fumes too :smt002 I change a lot more fuel pumps when prices go up and folks wait till Friday's paycheck clears to fill up from dead empty. The shock of cold gas on a hot pump ends in death of the part. GO GET GAS!!!! :smt044
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

GO GET GAS!!!! :smt044

except w Audi Roadside Assistance, I get three gallons of premium personally delivered, at no charge.
When gas soared to ~ $5/gallon, the assistance delivery guy thought it suspicious that I repeatedly ran out of gas just as I neared the garage at work or at home LOL :jerk:

Doing that can also effect the sending unit which in on the fuel pump my light never goes out. So for me it's until my truck stops

Thanks for all the auto-technical info Ron!
is there a warning sign that the pump is about to go?.....my cold start after work yesterday was very rough, like it was fuel starved. I turned it off, restarted, and it did the same. Third restart was the charm. This mornings cold start was normal. I am driving a 4cyl. honda crv w/ 213,000 mi.

Here is the reality, running on empty not good.  Why Kev, you ask?  All the funk and gunk sits at the bottom of the tank, when you run low you start picking up that crap (trust me its there),  it ends up in the fuel line, and eventuly in the fuel filter.  SOme vehicles are easy to switch out fuel filters, some are not, some engineers thought putting the fuel pump in the fuel tank was a good idea, because it saves space, hope you don't have to change that one.  My F-150 was pita to change out,a s it was pressurized, so I let some one else do it.  When I was stationed in italy I used to carry a spare fuel filter with me (or a ball point pen, and by pass the fuel filter).  Seems my US spec truck did not like Euro cheap ass gas.  Every 6 months I had to swap filters out on the side of the road (cause was moisture in the fuel, their gas really sucked).

Remember as the fuel filter starts to clog it makes the fuel pump work harder to deliver the fuel, fuel pump works harder it cuts down on life expactancy.  Dead fuel pump means $$$$ to replace.

Fuel pressure gauge is the only way to really tell for sure but, that is one of the symptoms...

And as to fuel gunk and crap in the tank.... Not so much... Stays fairly clean in there...

We just got a Camry hybrid, yeah it says that, but the your actual milage may vary light should come on.  Realistically it is not that high.  I can get EPA average easy enough 38 Highway/40 city, I even get have gotten milage as high as 85.6 mpg briefly(coming back from La Honda coasting down the mountain/ in battery mode all the way to Hwy 92via Canada Road), but the miles to go still counted down normally.
