My transducer became detached at Elk so I decided to give this method a shot.

I couldn't find an oversized pool noodle, but while wandering around the local Albertson's, I noticed the foam canned drink holders near the picnic supplies.  I chose the one with cute little fishies on it for $0.69 and took it home to give it a try.

The inside diameter of the can holder is too large as is to accomodate the Matrix transducer, so I trimmed a couple of inches off the top of the holder, removed about 3/4" of material from the scrap and glued it to the inside.  Result = perfect fit.  I tested it last weekend off Coral Street and my ff worked better than ever.

Thanks for the tip, P-Spark!

Randy

Thanks Josh works great I used a piece of 4" closed cell foam that's a little bigger and tougher that pool noodle. If any body needs some I have plenty.

After I did mine I tested it by filling it with water and checking for leaks. It leaked badly in one spot. It was nothing a little extra goop didn't fix. I love this set up. It certainly paid to water test it before I took it out.

I was able to pull it off with the smaller noodle, not perfect but it works.

The 4" noodles are a little rarer and tend to be seasonal (spring).  I used 3" for the transducer, then put a PVC pipe through it to make a dive float.  Stiffening it up with the PVC makes it very useful to flop your arms over to rest or talk in the water.

maybe someone has already suggested this, but kayak fishing stuff has foam blocks ready made for this pupose.  Here's the link to their rigging page.  You can buy the foam separately for about 2-3 bucks.  Comes with preapplied adhesive. Worked well for me

My foam mount works well for two trips, forthe thrid, 3 minutes after launching at Moss Landing, the depth inidcator started flashing. I stop outside the breakwater, scoooped saltwater into the foam and replaced the transducer--that was good for another 3 minutes and then failure once again. Goog thing I could tag along with Allen for the whole time of I'd have had a hard time fishing with no visible surface markers to find like Kelp.

The goop had delaminated from the hull and the water leaked out. When I peeled the foam off last night, the glued surface was convex indicating the foam sharnk a bit or the goop expanded. It might be that the thermal expansion coefficients of Goop and that foam are too far apart.

I can now report mixed results though I beleive it may have been the foam I ended up using. There are two kinds of closed-cell foams: 1) a glossy light-density foam with large air voids used in most pool noodles and 2) a usually gray more dense foam that is softer with no visible air voids. I originally was going to use the former, Bill gave me a piece but after cutting it I decided it was not snug enough and had to use the gray foam.

If I feel brave, I'll have to split a pool noodle and try again but if not I am going back to 'gooping'. A runied trip is not a risk I am willing to take with Bendo 2 coming up.

You could always glue down a spare transducer holder.  ;)

Yeah but then I'd need to keep remounting as they 'wear out'. Anyway, I fixed it I think. Turns out I used Marine Silicone and that bonds less well plus I didn't roughen up the surface of the hull. I roughend it up with med-coarse sandpaper, used Goop, and applied it profusely. Worked gerat at teh FOrebay this weekend. I'll water test it this week to ensure it holds water and remount if necessary.
