The wife wants a topo map of our yard for a landscape architect.   The surveyor wants 1200/day (way too high).  Does anyone know how to do this with a handheld gps and software?  I'm open to buying a handheld and I'm sure the software is free.  Just looking for tips and experience if anyone has it.

Does a handheld have the accuracy needed to measure 1foot increments????

Most handhelds only rate to 3 meter resolution, so one that goes to 1ft m/b super expensive. My buddy has does survey work & might have a transit I can borrow. If that helps any.

Thanks for the info Pat!    I''m not sure I feel comfortable with you putting yourself out there that much to help me.   Can you provide your friend's email so I can contact them to see if he wants the job?   I looked online and you can rent the equipment but it is still really expensive, like $400/day.  My college roommate is a civil engineer so I'll ask him too

Thanks Pat!

Eric, there is place in Sacramento called CA surveying and drafting supply, they rent submeter accuracy units, maybe a similar shop in your area. It's the satellite contract costs that drive up the prices usually along with the post processing. See if you can get a Trimble geo xt or xh not sure what the latest greatest is
