So just picked up a danielson style trap. Saw that they sold weighted doors for the trap, but figured if needed I have extra lead laying around. Is it worth weighting the doors or not?

A lot of guys say yes, keeps the doors from swinging around in the current, could prevent crab leaking.

It depends on where you will be crabbing. I don't at Doran, but would at locations where the current  is fast, without the weights it can keep the doors open.

I weighted mine only on one side per door. I used these....

Just remove the rubber, slip on and slightly pinch the wire below the sinker so they don't slide off.

Any tidal current will allow doors to open/close. On short day soaks you may not notice much leakage, but overnight soaks will be impacted.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I'll do it when I get around to it, but since I"ll mostly be doing day soaks, should be fine.

In my opinion, I think there are better options than buying the rubber core sinkers as they are about $1 per weight when buying 1oz+ sizes.  I was about to go that route as well, until I noticed the weighted trap doors at sports authority for $7 or $9 at FW.  Looks like they have about two 1.5oz weights on each door.

Or as lil snapperhead mentioned, the lead wire is a good idea.  I bought a coil of lead wire from Mel Cotton's for about $6-7 and it was a 1lb of lead I believe.

I use my wife's hairbands to make the doors slam shut after a crab enters. You could also use bungee or surgical tubing. Its hard to explain but seems to work great. I'd post a picture but I don't know where my Danielson trap is... :smt009  Can't remember who has it LOL!
