hey everyone I'm kinda confused here  :smt005
the 2 rod stamp license says only on inland waters. But on peoples videos i see them using 2 rods in the ocean?
So where exactly can you use 2 rods?

Some species in the ocean you can have more than 1 rod w/o the need for a stamp.

How I've read it..

2 rods can be used anywhere (river or lake) east of carqinez bridge, with a 2 rod stamp.
Not in the bay.. west of carqinez to golden gate.
Ocean( west of golden gate) is species specific

2 rods can be used anywhere (river or lake) east of carqinez bridge, with a 2 rod stamp.

Except where there are gear restrictions.

From 2012-2013 DFG freshwater regs-Article 1. Fishing Methods and gear restrictions Section 2.0 Fishing Methods- General

"Anglers in possession of a valid two-rod stamp and anglers under 16 years of age may use up to two rods in inland waters which regulations provide for the taking of fish by angling, except those waters in which only artifical lure or barbless hooks may be used.

... Example- American River barbless section Hazel Ave Bridge piers to the SMUD power line crossing at the south-west boundary of Ancil Hoffman Park.

I have seen many people make this mistake specifically in this section.

So wait. You can use two rods. Inland but if its barbless or artificial only then it's one rod only. Why would that make any sense.

Can someone explain the whole 1 rod
restriction to me anyway. What is the logic behind it?

I understand you do not want guys running 15 or 20 lines in the water. But what is the logic between a area/species where you can use two or you are restricted to one.

Not criticizing just wondering.

Best,
Phil

IMO they are protecting the species in both cases.  More gut hooked/killed fish when using bait and easier on release with barbless.  Single pole means more attention, less risk of above, and possibly reduced catch rates.

I dont know squat about freshwater fishing but for the Monterey Bay area, you can use multiple rods to fish for seabass and halibut.  One rod for salmon and rockfish.

Because it's hard to fish 2 rods at once while using barbless artificials. They're just trying to protect the fish.
There was a time (like 4yrs ago) when the 2-Rod Stamp wasn't valid on most rivers/streams/moving water.

In the ocean, you can use as many rods as you can handle. But you can only use 1 rod for certain species (like RF salmon, moochfish, etc).

You can use 27 rods for halibut, if you can manage them. (-: But if you happened to catch a striper while using 27 rods, you'd have to let it go. Btw I just picked 27 to be funny--there's no limit. So you can use 28 or 7 or 14 or however many you own. As lon as you are actively fishing them (can't just cast out a bunch of lines then go to work haha).
