I was plannin on going after some cod saturday but monterey's swell and wind looks a little rough so i was considering giving moss landing a try. I have never tried out there and i don't even know if there's any rock piles out front. If anyone has any info on cod fishing and halibut in this area i would really appreciate the info....thanks

Moss is very exposed to wind and swell.  The jetty leading out of the harbor can be torrential and there are little/no structure for groundfish.  I do not recommend this.

W WINDS 10 KT. WIND WAVES LESS THAN 2 FT. W SWELL 3 TO
5 FT...SHIFTING TO THE NW 2 TO 4 FT.

That is the forecast for Saturday and looks fine.  I would not hesitate to go out on a day like that.  I agree with Matt that Moss is not a great rockfish launch spot.

yeah maybe some butts and/or salmon. but as Matt mentioned there is no shelter and you are talking serious deep water in close. I say stick to SC or monterey WX permitting

Moss is not necessarily crap, its just not good for Rockies. It can also be very treacherous.  It is a good Striper and Salmon launch point however.  If you have a fish finder it can be fun and kinda creepy to paddle over the canyon.  The first time I paddled over the canyon I thought my FF was malfunctioning because all of a sudden it lost its ability sound the bottom and was displying a bunch or jargon.  It would switch back and fourth between 10 fow to 500 to 900 and back to 10 feet.  I actually stopped paddling and attempted to troubleshoot my fishfinder.  It took me a few minuets to realize that I was floating above the canyon.  Kinda excited and creeped me out at the same time.

Yeah, Moss landing is right in the middle of the bay so it is exposed to swell & wind from all directions. Compared to the north side, Santa Cruz which is very protected...and the south side, Monterey which is also protected. Plus, to get outta Moss you have to plan your trip to coincide with the tidal flux---you want to paddle out during an outgoing tide and return during an incoming tide.
Good luck!

yeah a few yrs back going for salmon for shits and giggles I dropped some lead as far as I could....spooled me at a few hundred yards. I am sure I wasn't vertical but MAN that is deep.
