Fished with a friend Sunday and I fished poorly.  Lost a ling that came unpinned then hooked a very heavy lingcod on my greenling stick (14#) that took 4-5 runs and I never even turned it's head before breaking off.  I got a just legal ling to the boat and after reaching for the gaff, there was only a naked jig when I turned back.  Strike 3.

One of my battery alarms went off so I knew we were out for over 6 hours.  A small gray whale blew through us and took a breath about 30 feet away.

I noted a small craft offshore was fishing way too deep.  They came alongside an hour later to ask if all their fish were legal.  I told them they were but taken illegally and they should know what yelloweye and canaries look like and the regs.  They made Western European immigrants from Sacramento look bad.  Their sack included 2 fat coppers under 10#.  We expect those fish to move shallow next month.

I realeased a dozen fish and brought home a gopher, a blue and 2 black and yellow rockfish, about a pound each.  The higher my expectations, the lower my performance seems to be.  That's fishing.

BTW, I guided Malibu last weekend and while we missed the halibut and wsb bite, we landed several Horse Mackerel.  A first for me, these are "aji" in the sushi bar, a white meat mac that is DELICIOUS raw in ponzu with grated garlic, ginger and some scallion.  4-6 pound fish, they were gone the next day.  If you see them, keep them!

Too bad about the ling loss!

I got a batch of my secret swimbaits on its way from So. Cal. as we speak, so I'm hoping to up my ling game.

I feel the same way sometimes.

hmmm . . .

Would a sabiki be too small for these? Might have to put my dad's trout flies to work.

I had a ling cough up a mackerel of some kind a few months ago at TC.

Sushi eh?

I'm adding soy sauce packets to my tackle.
