partington cove, big sur

I was doing a little surfing this weekend (got fullers good, woo-hoo), and chatted with a local that launches his seakayak out of partington cove.

anybody got anything to add on this one?

You can only launch out of there if its really calm. The water can be very rough there. The cove has a lot of rocks and boulders and a mistake during landing can be very expensive.
Its also a pretty long walk back uphill.

I hit Molera on Saturday and it was SO FLAT!
I would really like to launch there in the near future...maybe Saturday? The structure just off the beach looks epic. I even saw a HUGE steelhead cruising near the rivermouth. Once-in-a-lifetime type stuff...now I'm amped for steelhead season and its only August.
Did catch some nice fish from shore there, including a 25.5 inch lingcod.

I surfed fullers on saturday and the swell was way way south but it was solidly overhead, no wind and I was the fifth guy to paddle out. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

how long was the hike in to molera? I have been in there to surf (usually shitty), I remember a long long walk, you must have strong legs and good wheels, not to mention a stubborn disposition. oh, wait, I see you are saying no kayak. still, a legal ling from shore, fine work!

my legs are still killing me from the hike back up the cliff @ fullers. I checked a topo, it is 500 vertical feet.

This place is my fantasy.  The trail is almost 1/2 mile and descends 600ft.  I'd love to try it with someone else committed to the tough trip back to the roadside.

Yup...the hike/walk down to the beach at Molera is kinda long...but usually worth it [unless you're planning to surf, in which case the break off the point has to be perfect---and never is] Supposedly there is a gnarly sick break down at Willow Creek during march but I don't mess with that type stuff. (You can get into Molera for free if you park on the right shoulder just before the entrance---look for the gate and fire road---walk down fire road and across the river, if breached.)

Good luck if you hit Partington. I assume most of the near-shore reefs there are fished out because there are SO many people that shore-fish there on a regualr basis. Totally fished out from shore. But you got a yak so that doen't really matter--just paddle out further.

That place looks fishy on the south and the north out of the cove. I heard that you could drive down the trail and park vehicles near the cove. But it requires a reservation in advance. I have not called, so it is unconfirmed. I will call to check into this info.

I would commit launching yak once, to see and explore the area.

I have scouted partington cove's condition today, when the ocean is flat. I am convinced that place is not easy to launch. I walked down to the ends of both paths (one through tunnel leading to man-made posts, the other leading to stone/rock beach. and I check the conditions. Here are observations:

1) The problem with the stone beach is rough and no space to work with kayaks. Breakers push in constantly at 2-3 second interval. It is risk to get yourself injured or kayak damaged.
2) The problem with the man-made posts is you have to use rope, estimated as high as 15-20ft. Water below is not always calm. Definitely, team work is required.

Not to mention a 1/4 steep hike up and down. It is a little discouraging, given the place would be fishing paradise.
