I like the combo units. (Have one, not color though) my PFD pockest are somewhat tight, and trying to pack a carry on GPS, that, would have to waterproof, into a pocket would be a PITA. I'm certinally not going to keep the handheld GPS in a hatch, defeats whole purpose of having it!
I don't see a need to carry an extra one.  My FF GPS does everything I need it to, and it's within easy reach, as I planned it that way.  I won't have to bother holding a handheld GPS and paddle at the same time.  I simply look down and get all the information I need at the moment, corse, speed, time, depth, and water temp it's allways there, when the FF is on.

I have a compass installed as well.  What if your handheld GPS isn't water proof, and say it gets swamped?  Better make sure its water proof before you buy it, no electronics are going to work 100% all of the time.  It's simple for me, less to carry and worry about possibly loosing over the side.
Oh how about this scenario, Your in the process of looking at a handheld GPS and wham!  zeeeeee fisn on! in your excitment, you hastenly shove the GPs into a pocket.  During your epic battle with that huge halibut, after you land it it shakes and whacks the very pocket your GPS was in, plop.
I'll never worry about something like that happening.
This argument, like the 9mm Vs .45 cal could go on forever.  I like combo unit.
