Ha! Yes I've been smoked in the cabriolet Tote. I do 2-3 diesel smogs a day. I get 1 out of ten w/o mods on it. Some legal some not... Torque converter problems can change shift points and high RPM Soot. It was a generalization about Diesel owners all modifying them Morgan. That being said. Get at least an intake kit for yours!!!! (smog legal of coarse)  :smt044 :smt044 The penalties for registering out of area can result in loss of vehicle and criminal charges of fraud with intent to circumvent FEDERAL EPA LAWS. (A federal felony) The state is checking and prosecuting on this and every thing else to get cash. Don't open that door.... It's not that big of a deal... Get it smogged and enjoy the California clear air and lower pollution (air) then Detroit and LA... :smt006
Oh, gross polluters are going off the road fast... DMV won't give out extensions anymore. Now it falls to local police to pull over and tow off unregistered vehicles. Call your local police and supply License # and location of vehicle. they respond 2% of the time. Bigger fish to fry. I guess it doesn't bring enough cash in to make it worth their while.

Kinda figured you were generalizing but I wanted to be assumed innocent until convicted.

That "smogcheck.ca.gov" site is useless.  I couldn't find any section relating to "Mods" so they did their job right in burying the information so we can't find it easily.
My truck is stock except for the fule delivery system.  The stock fuel pump kept killing my injector pump (fortunatly still under warrany then) so I got rid it the stock.
Exhaust is still factory.  My truck doesn't smoke, unless up in elevation like up in Tahoe.   :smt013

I would suggest taking it to  the dealer to smog it. I went through a small smog only shop and the guy had no idea how to smog a diesel, he took my money made me wait, then told me it failed. my truck was 100% stock with 60k on it. after asking questions that guy straight up told me he hit a wrong button that caused it to fail in there computer system, that goes straight to the state. so I was SOL. took it straight to the dealer and they cut me slack and smoked it right there, took all of 20 min and another $60 but it was legal again. I will only only to a 5 star dealer for smog on my truck form here on out. even if its a little more they know the laws and have vested interest in making sure your truck passes.

Man!!! I couldn't find anything either... The page they had has expired/been removed.... I go by the EO# on the part in Question and look it up in the index. Also motors manual ($300.00) for info. Also have to call ARB sometimes for clarification... Such BS! Dang state can't tell me what to do, but can fine me if I do it wrong... You think your frustrated and angry? I get crap from the state and customers too! No win situation for me :smt011 I'm out of answers so I'm going fishing.
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

you might try giving banks a call or email, gale banks had a lot to do with the writing the laws. for a while you had to follow all the ARB rules but there was no written guide lines just a way of enforcing said rules. or something to that effect. I know gale banks had a lot to do with it on our side of things so maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Called my local smog shop, talked to either the owner or a tech, (Not sure which one just yet) he mentioned that my aftermarket fuel filter and exhaust brake are exempt and won't fail for them.   No emissions test (no tailpipe violation) just a smoke test.  Apparently if it smokes, the smpoke has to disspate in 3 sec or less, otherwise it'll fail.  Fortunatly my truck doesn't smoke.
So, Saturday I get to shell out $50 to allow the state to regester my truck again.  :smt013
