Let me preface this by saying I'm in San Luis Co. so I am looking more for central coast or lower norcal campgrounds. I don't mind driving a ways, but nothing more than 4-6 hours preferably.

I'm looking for a place to camp along the river for a few days this coming month. I'm taking the 15th and the 18th of July off and would love to introduce my wife to river fishing.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a fairly rural river campground? We'll be taking our dog so it must be pet friendly. Preferably as primitive as possible (I'm very into spartan camping I don't use a tent even.) I may or may not take the 'yak, I only have a single kayak and I'm not into leaving her alone in the wild for any length of time.

I do a good bit of offroading so I don't mind having a rougher ride in. Mostly I'm after a quiet place where there won't be many people, my wife has social phobia, Agoraphobia and Panic disorder. People tend to just freak her out, even if they are extremely nice - it's not a rational fear @ all.

I really appreciate your help!

All the coastal river campsites will be populated.  To really get away, head 3 1/2 hours east to the kern river.  Its fishing great right now, big stockers 4-6 lbs, even though flows are high.  You can bring your yak and hit Lake Isabella too.

Up past Johnsondale bridge, you can totally get lost in the woods and won't see a soul.  There is also some federal primitive campsites toward Kennedy Meadows where you can really rough it.  Watch out for rattlers and other nasties.

Sorry i didn't see this earlier, but try Mammoth pools lake. It's about an hour or more out of fresno on the San Joaquin River. you camp right on the lake and there are numerous sites that people have made.

Upper Kings River above Pine Flat Res? I wouldn't recommend kayaking down it, but there's decent fishing for native trout & smallmouth bass with kinda-remote riverside camping. You can always yak Pine Flat Res.
There's actually a bnunch of great camping destinations above fresno, which I assume is closest to SLO. But you'll be limited by snowpack for the next few weeks. Mono Creek hotsprings comes to mind as a cool spot for the family.
