Got an ancient spool of mono laying around?
Here's a tip on what to do with that or any old spool of fishing line.
Practice tying knots.
Get a small garbage can, a pair of scissors and a couple of paper clips.
Use the clips just as they are. No need to make a fake hook out of it.
I use paper clips instead of hooks for a couple of reasons.
I won't stick myself with a paperclip.
After tying the knot I can slide it off the clip to better inspect the job I did.
If I loose one no one will step on it.
Sit down with your stuff,  pull up this site and have at it.

Great idea Tote!!

I for sure could use some practice and could benefit from a few new knots...I have my few that I use all the time, but know there are other ones out there that could help me out in certain situations.

Cool site!

Jim

Great idea! Also, don't throw mono into the garbage. You can recycle it. Many of the local fishing piers have line-recycling bins now. I actually wind up all my old mono into a huge ball (like 6-months-worth of random mono) then place it in the line-recycling bin on Wharf 2 in Monterey.

Just a little threadjack Tote!

After you learn to tie a new knot.........test it. :smt003

You can test knots by tying them onto a solid ring for hook knots, or to each other for leader knots. Then wrap the loose ends on hardwood dowels that have a groove in the middle, then pull and see which breaks first.
Groove dowel with a pipecutter or spin in drillpress and file. You can use a workbench or a vise to hold a eyescrew also. Be careful and use short lengths of mono/flouro also Protect your eyes and skin ,wear eye protection, long sleeves, and gloves.
The grooved dowels are also very handy when you tighten spectra. :smt002
unless you like the battle scars
Then post a picture of the one that didn't get away! :smt004

Great idea! I make leaders out of the old line, depends on how old the line is.
Great stuff to practice on regardless. Thanks
