Got an email from Paypal threatening legal crap over a donate button on my website for a raffle...had to cancel the raffle...I am pissed...I had collected about 600.00 but then had to turn around and issue refunds to everyone...of course minus the Paypal fees...I took a beating on this just trying to help out...I applogize to everyone involved...I learned a valuable lesson...don't use paypal..and only hold raffles in person with cash...I will regroup after this weekend and try and figure out what to do...again I applogize

I know the pain.  This is why we don't have Paypal for the PIF paddle.  I had the same exact thing happen for last year's PIF paddle.  It's not just Paypal.  I believe it is regulated, so they are legally not allowed to do it.

This is also one of the reasons we are considering registering a 503(c)(3) non-profit because non-profits are exempt and can do raffles on pay sites.  And they can make the donations tax exempt!!!  Any NCKA'ers have any expertise in this regard?  I could use some help.

My dad does this kind of thing for a living.  I can ask him if we don't have any civil attorney kayak fishermen wanting to jump in on this.

Just missed this years  non-profit boot camp by a few weeks.   It's well worth attending for anybody thinking about a start-up.
  http://craigslistfoundation.org/events/boot-camp/

I picked up some literature in an attempt to start-up a non-profit a few years ago... I'll dig up what I have and bring it to the PIF     There's connections to resources available through craigslist foundation.    All told,  not too difficult to get off the ground with the right appointed board of directors.

Vincent,  It might be possible to contact PayPal, explain it was all for a charitable cause and ask them to void the fees.

Sux when you try to do something good for humanity and blood-suckers want to "tax" you for it.
Fee is just another three letter word for TAX

Hey Vince:

A couple of almost appropriate quotes:

"No guts, no GLORY!!"

"Rather be sorry for something I did do than regret something I didn't do."

"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."

Seriously thanks for the pure intentions and the karma points count, bud!!

I did that with last year's PIF paddle.  It didn't work.   :smt009
