I work at UCSC, at a couple of the Colleges where students live.  Each year we have a "family Day" so parents can visit and see how the kids are living etc.  We have tours and talks and stuff like that for the parents.

This year, my boss asked if could get Sean Van Sommeran to do the main lecture.  Perfect timing, and this way he'll get some $$ to support his Pelagic Research Foundation.

so, he'll be speaking from 2:15 to 3:15 on Febrauary 5th, and you are all invited.  It's free and we can arrange for an extended Q and A session after 3:15 if we need to.

Sean also uses these talks to recruit volunteers for PSRF.  If any of you are interested in catching, counting, or tagging sharks and rays you have to show up and sign up.  Because we won't get many students at this Saturday afternoon talk, Sean agreed to come back in a couple weeks for an evening session.  Once I schedule that session, I'll post that here as well.

Love to see a good NCKA contingent for this event, it's a great opportunity to see great pix and video and get a scientific yet adventurous perspective on these beautiful beasts.

Just wanted to update and remind everyone this preentation if going on this coming saturday at 2pm.  Merrill College, UCSC, the Cultural Center at Merrill.  Sean says he'll stick around for some Q and A afterthe formal "talk."

Added these pics as teasesr.  Shot #2 is one I tok in 2004 while on a tagging espedition with the PSRF.

Thanks for letting us in on this, Allen. Can you keep us posted if there is a future date?

Sounds like a great rainy day activity, even if it isn't raining!

VERY interested in this but not sure I can make it Sat.  If not, the evening one for sure.  Much respect for Van Sommeran.

I want to hear more about this catching business.

I just wrote it on my calendar! Will try to do some fishing beforehand...either shore-bound in the sea or one of the nearby freshwater options, like Pinto (geez I miss Loch Lomond!)

Ditto! I've always wanted to tag some of the local leopard sharks. I looked into it way back in '98, but there were very little resources back then. I'd also be interested in tagging mud marlin.

I'm still thinking about attending this, Bushnell. If I'm able to sneak away (grandmother-in-law is visiting), I'll cruise by and check it out. I'm not familiar w/the campus though---where is: "Merrill College, UCSC, the Cultural Center at Merrill"

Best bet is google UCSC maps Merrill.... that will get you to the parking lot (#119) and signage and/or staff will direct people from there.

Hope you can make it!
