I went by Stillwater Cove, Pebble Beach and saw 2 new signs reminding KAYAKERS not to use the parking lot reserved for beach & tennis club members. Please drop off kayaks and gear and then park next to the 17th tee, between the tall hedges designated for COASTAL ACCESS. We don't need to piss off the good folks who let us fish there. It's a short walk to the parking lot and they all love to see us displaying our big stringers as we return to get our vehichles  . Thanks

Thanks for the notice DC :D I agree with you that we don't want to piss off the wealthy lol.

I'm hoping to make it out there before the season closed. Only if the wsb will just allow me to do so lol  :smt044

:smt012 The fact that they had to even put up these signs is annoying...it's been long known that us kayakers should be parking our rides next to the 17th tee, and not in the main lot other than for loading/unloading.  It's been posted here as a reminder more than once.  Yet on each of my trips to SWS I continue to see vehicles with roof-racks parked right next to the launch, while their owners are out fishing or diving.  If this keeps up I can envision a day in the future where the club won't even let us use the lot for drop-off due to people having abused the privilege once too often.  That would suck...pay attention, people.

Pete...I believe they cannot legally block access to any beach. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think it's bad enough that we have to pay the "entrance fee" to get access to a public beach :smt011 It's not like Pebble Beach is a State Park....or is is?

Joel, I agree with you on the entrance fee, bro.  It sucks.  :smt009 I could be wrong, but while they can't block beach access, I bet they can block us from parking in their private lot.  Sure, we can park by the 17th and use Wheeleze to roll everything to the launch, but that would suck, especially if it reached that point because people abused the current parking privileges.  All I'm saying is we should respect their wishes and only use the lot for loading/off-loading gear.

I've been told that they can legally close access to the beach 10 weekends a year so not foloowing the rules and being aware could cause more issues. We need this access.

Pebble Beach and the county, coastal commission, and probably allot of other agencies came to agreement I think in the early 80s to allow public access to Stillwater "in perpetuity" but under certain restrictions.  I think this was done to apease some agencies during the permiting process, (maybe for Spanish bay) I also think the Monterey diving community was a big driver in all this.  I remember back about 85 when you had to make a reservation. Now it's just park and go.

The long and the short is I don't think they (PB) can close the access, but I do believe they could make it more restrictive.

Follow the rules, it's best for our continued trouble free access.

Agreed.

It also helps that we kayak fishermen and divers try to conceal ourselves better when changing into our wetsuites....then again, that one and only bathroom that they have is not always open :smt011

Signs aren't a bad thing.
I'd guess NCKA makes up less than 10% of the population that uses Stillwater. So these signs are the only way to inform the other 90% (or by kindly informing other people you see using the parking spaces beside the pier).
