I have a HP laptop, it only has an S-Video output but the quality isnt that great. I have an HDTV with HDMI input, so I am trying to figure out what's best for my situation.

Does anyone know of a legit VGA to HDMI converter. Ive seen several on the internet, but I don't want to throw my money at something and have horrible resolution like the S-video.

If it has wifi, I would look at getting a blueRay player with Wifi.  there were a couple different brands at Costco for $115-$130.  Get a blue ray player and a connection to the TV for Netflix.

I've only got limited knowledge about this type of stuff, but have initial thoughts about your situation.  I myself use a LG TV for my 'monitor' on my home PC, using the built in HDMI on both the tv and computer.  The TV also has SVGA in, and before I got an HDMI cable I ran SVGA-SVGA and it worked fine and looked no differnt to me when I replace it with HDMI.   As far as this article says, the higher resolutions aren't possible without using HDMI: http://www.ehow.com/about_6708503_vga-input-vs_-hdmi.html  So I'm going to guess that you can only expect lower resolutions (what ever that means) or basically SVGA quality out of a converter cable.  And it wont pass the sound to the TV either, you will need to use an AUX in to plug into the TV or Stereo.

does your tv have component inputs?

the VGA (normal monitor output) and component are teh same (more or less), so you can get loads of VGA to component. THat gets your video out, then you can do a similar for the audio- headphone jack to RCA audio l/r
that'll get your 720p output

Yes, TV has component, HDMI, S-video and the normal rca's as well. I wish the TV had a DVI in or even VGA, it would make life a lot easier.

I will have to look into that more. I bought that adapter cable off Ebay a while back about 2, but it didnt work. Ill see if I can find something a little more locally than Hong Kong  :smt004

Hit up your local best buy/radio shack. It will cost a little more but if it doesn't work or looks bad you can return it

I'm surprised it took this thread this long to get to this point... :smt044  You all showed remarkable restraint!
