Went fishing at Shelter Cove on Saturday and used my Lowrance Elite 5 Gold Sonar/GPS for the first time. I had purchased a M68-C and returned it because the built in map did not show bottom contour. I am so glad I went with the bigger unit. The GPS is very detailed and I can see all the bottom contours. The fish finder also worked well. I have always owned Lowrances and this one is also great. I installed the transducer to the rudder. It was an easy installation and I like not shooting through the hull.

That's great.  After having a 5" screen on my last GPS/finder I just couldn't settle for the smaller screen so I installed a Garmin 498 which is out of production now.  What I like about your new unit is the waterproof feature.  Mine has a card slot that has a seal but I'm not convinced it's waterproof like yours.  So how much did it cost and where did you find it?

I looked around online and the best price including shipping was just under $580. It took just under a week to receive it.
http://www.hodgesmarine.com/ShoppingCart.asp  I called around and since this is a new model most dealers don't have them in stock yet.

Looks like a good unit. Thanks for the info Prophet.
So this one has a built-in base map w/underwater topo? I've been using the Navionics SD cards for underwater topography info/depth contours...but it w/b cool if I didn't have to buy a new SD card with my next unit. Because those cards are expensive and it's 1 more thing that could potentially break.

They do actually send a  2GB Navionics Gold micro SD card with full Gold coastal/offshore coverage of US and Canadian waters along with coverage of The Great Lakes, Alaska, Hawaii, the Bahamas and over 125 major Canadian lakes. The unit with the card is designated Gold the regular Elite 5 comes with the same map as the M68-C I sent back. The unit is only about $60 more than the regular Elite 5. I priced the card separately and it was $170. So it's a good buy to get the upgraded Gold unit.
