While reading some reports on here. It seems that some anglers are using 2 rods. Is this legal in the ocean?

you are allowed to use as many rods as you want as long as you consider species restrictions such as:

rockfish, lings, etc - 1 rod, up to 2 hooks max
salmon - 1 rod, barbless circles with bait, barbless artificials otherwise, etc etc.
and other special species restrictions..which escape me at the moment.

if you fish in the ocean for halibut, you can use 10 rods if you feel like it and can handle them and monitor them (theoretically anyways)

if you do fish with two rods, and you catch a rockfish (salmon too), you must release it.  once you keep a rockfish, you are no longer allowed to use two rods - you have to follow the rockfish regulations.

none of this is true in san francisco bay - if you are fishing from a boat, you may use one rod per person maximum

Thanks for the info BMB...and what about sabikis? Is there a hook limit on those or can you use the whole rig?

Technically...legally...I would think you have to still abide by the one rod/two hooks rule once a RF is on board.

I hardly ever jig up bait so not a big issue for me!! Of course that may be why I SUCK at catching a Halibut!!   :smt002 :smt005 :smt044

no limit on number of hooks you can use in the ocean, you could have a 15 hook sabiki rig if you want.  yes the same species restrictions apply though, if you catch a rf(salmon?) on a sabiki you have to release it. if you have retained a fish with a species restriction, you can no longer use sabiki that day.

a good way to halibut fish the ocean is to have two rods with live bait and an extra sabiki stick if you need to jig up extra bait - make sure you can handle the rods though, that's actually a rule.

In the bay sabikis can only have up to 3 hooks, so you usually have to cut a few off.

WARNING: Fish at the end of my spear are larger than they appear.

Good One Rick,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I occasionally used 2 rods (when and where legal) and one of 2 things happened,

either I continued to catch nothing,

or

I had fish on both rods at the same time which was a pain in the ass,

I just gave up and don't bother any more,

but I do still buy that stamp :smt002

that's usually what happens to me when i use two rods.  at least I can catch nothing twice as fast though!

Let me see if I understand this right. If I wanted to fish for halibut with 2 or more rods and jig bait at the same time in Tomales, Drakes, Albion, Fort Ross, Humbolt or anywhere else besides what's east of the golden gate I'd be legal? As long as am not keeping any rockfish, lings, salmon, etc.. Right?

Correct.

The two-rod stamp only applies to freshwater. No stamp necessary to fish multiple rods in the ocean.
