last weekend when i was riding around in the boat i saw a group of young guys in a zodiac style boat pole spearing san carlos beach in real shallow. they had 2 pole spears and 5 or so divers. 2 using them and 3 not using anything that i could see.

being that this area is off limits to spearfishing does pole spearing get the ok?

vis looked like krap.

Pretty sure its part of the Ricketts SMCA....hook and line only.  Definitely no exception for pole spears that I can find.

If they weren't using a hook + line for finfish, then it's illegal. But that place is kookcentral, so I assume they simply didn't know the regs. No excuse, just sayin I'm not surprised.

Thats actually one of my favorite spots to eat lunch and do a little kookwatching.....fins + surf + newbiescubas = entertainment.

$300 for a misdemeanor, if they are lucky. I wonder if there is a resident ranger nowadays, budget cuts.

i didnt see any rangers on / off the water, no concerned citizens, just a bunch of scuba divers, and a bunch of teens on an inflatable looking for a few fish to spear.

i dont see why they ever closed this area off, it used to be heaven's gate for calicos, sheeps and lings, as well as rf and halibut.....while spearing.

oh well, hope the kids know better next time, i'd have warned them had i know.

lets get out and dive!

I'm sure these folks, the businesses that cater to them and the $$$ that comes in might have something to do with it.
