I just started car pooling with a guy who grew up in Australia. We were talking about all the things in the ocean that kill people in Australia (whitey, blue ringed octopus, crocodiles,etc....)

Apparently, Aussies think we people in the USA are nuts for wearing a black wetsuit, you will not find an Aussie wearing a black wetsuit. They say it makes no sense to dress like the food Whitey loves to eat...

They also have a saying there that whitey and crocs seem to like the taste of Americans, because thats who usually gets eaten!! :smt012 :smt003

If you're really worried about sharks my advice is to not to fish sharky spots at all. There's plenty out there that have no attack history and you'll be a lot safer and be more worry free there.

I personally don't want to get attacked so stay away from places that have a history of them. Every now and then I will fish a places that's had shark sightings in the past and know I'm at risk. I accept it as a risk and trust my instincts.

Did y'all see the 60 Minutes story last night on the South African guy who goes snorkel-diving with GWS? After attracting them to his boat with bloody fish chumming? He pets them from the boat first to try to identify the playful social ones! Great underwater video of their encounters. They even got Anderson Cooper from CBS into the water for awhile!

And yes, they were wearing black wetsuits.

The guy says he likes the lovely blue color around their eyeballs! That's a close encounter.

The Grizzly Adams of Shark Alley.

Grizzly Adams or grisly idiot?

I say just leave them sharks alone, and maybe they will return the favor.

I hate the shark cage tourism.  In my mind that can only serve to form an association of food=people..

I hope to host a GWS seminar this Spring at UCSC with Sean Van Sommeran from the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation.  psrf.org

last time I think we had one NCKA guys show up.  any interest out there in coming over the hill on a weeknight for  video, slideshow and live presentation by one of the world's foremost rearchers?

Lemmeno and I can set something up.

or, maybe on a weekend night instead?  Might be easier ?

The reality is that you are going to die no matter what. Stay home and you still die.  Get on the water and enjoy your life !
