I've been wearing my 3ml farmer john, some polypro shorts underneath, thick socks, then tempest pants, & 5 or 7 ml booties.

Jim, does your lower body get too warm at all to the point of being uncomfortable?  In January?  In August?  Let me know, thx.

I wore that combo all of this January, six trips total, & lower body never got to warm. By the end of a full day my feet were sometimes getting cold and my hands got cold but only when it was choppy & windy and the gloves got wet. In August I have just worn my 3ml farmer john, booties, short sleeve rashguard top, and hat. I always wear my pfd. With this combo when I occasionally get too warm in the summer I just stick my feet in the water for a minute to disperse some heat.

Part of the equation is how good your circulatory system functions. Different people need more or less layers to maintain their body temp. jim

Anyone have advice on the sizing of these pants?

The sizing charts puts me kinda between a M and L, so I would tend to go L...

I'd definitely go for large.  You don't want it too tight!

I can't comment on the Tempest Pants directly, but I just dropped $1,000 on a Kokotat Goretex Meridian full drysuit with the Goretex booties and it is THE BOMB.

If you want the Goretex booties to last and not leak, you must wear some kind of overboat to prevent them from getting pinhole punctures from walking around on gravel, sand, pavement, etc... the good news though is that Kokotat has an excellent repair shop and they can fix leaks for very small charge.

As for the drysuit, the whitewater version has an exterior skirt that goes over the outside of my sprayskirt, and neoprene neck & arm gaskets.  I am kayaking this winter in some VERY cold water... the picture above is from 2 weekends ago on the North Fork of the American... it was about 38F at the put-in with snow fluries, and the water was probably about 42F (guessing).  With a base layer of midweight thermals (NF or HH) topped with a midweight fleece layer, I haven't got cold, nor have I been too hot... just right, just like the porridge.

If I was fishing more I'd probably drop dime on a non-whitewater Goretex drysuit as it is so versatile and safe.  FYI, the less expensive Tropos fabric offered by Kokotat doesn't breath as well as Goretex.

Your milage may vary... stay safe!

BC

p.s. 2 weeks ago, in spite of the high runoff, the water was very clear, and I saw a shitton of big trout in several freestone areas of 2-3 foot deep water... no way could you safey get a sit-on-top through most of the rapids as there is simply too much turning required, but in April I will be going back with my telescoping rod and will fish some of the holes that can only be accessed by kayak (or raft).

Agreed. XL, and two layers of fleece and NRS base had me sitting on the hook sturgeon fishing when it was 20F.  34" waist, i would have normally gone with the L. The waistband sinches down well, and I've done just as fine with a single light layer and walked around in the surf with my wife...

I am 5-11 180ounds. Call me vain but I thought the large pants were too baggy. Since then I have used them on the river with just shorts under all the way to a 3mil FJ wetsuit on the bay. No problem at all. Not constricting in the least. I have heard some hobie guys complaining about the pants leaking at the seams. Possibly due to the peddling movement loosening the seams.

i too had a problem with the seams in one of the legs/bootie. I was hanging my foot over the yak in current for many hours in a slough. At the end of the day, my socks and pants were very wet. I called the place i bought them and they replaced them, said they should not leak at all.
They are sized large, the legs have plenty of room to bend/crouch without a pulling a self induced snuggie.
