Glad it worked out for you, Ryan, and thanks for sharing it for all to learn from.  Getting your kayak back must've felt incredible.   :smt001

THnaks for sharing your story. I had a similar situation but was lucky enough to be close to a beach and in somewhat shallow water. I will be upgrading and seals on everything and making sure to get a lot of noodles.
Glad everything worked out ok.

I was waiting to hear this story. Glad it had a Happy Ending!
...the guy who towed it back to shore should've been like Finders Keepers Dude!  :smt044

Real question though, did that Trident have a factory-installed Rodpod, or did you install the Rodpod yourself?

I think the rodpod is the main weak point. It could use a lid that doesn't warp from pressure or heat.

It seems to be the T13 which have had hull integrity problems, correct? One theory could be when the boat is fully loaded and in rough conditions, the flexing of the hull causes the rod pod to leak. I have been concerned about the scupper hole transducer causing slow drainage on my T15 and will add spacers. Thanks for the idea Ryan. I use my P15 when fishing rough conditions or remote locations because I don't have same confidence in my T15.

As far as emergency equipment, VHF radios sometimes don't work well when they are wet. Water on the speaker and microphone can cause transmission issues. I have owned several (Uniden, West Marine, Standard Horizon) and have had issues with all of them. ICOM has a feature which clears the microphone of water but I have never tested it. I now use an Icom which is in an Aquapack drybag attached to my PFD and have complete confidence that it will work if I am in the water. I also have an EPIRB on my PFD as a backup to my VHF.

The bottom line, glad you survived and got your yak back. Every incident is an opportunity to learn from. Thanks for sharing Ryan.  :smt006
