Anybody use one of these?  I was looking at one today and the guy told me that I would have to download software from Lowrance site to make it work for me, and that they charge something like 40 bucks for the download.   Im wondering if the ifinder will work as is for now..  I would need it more as a safety item than for marking spots for now, setting my launch and waypoints and all that in case of fog.

I've been using the Ifinder H20 handheld GPS for like 3 years. That = about 50 saltwater trips. And it still works perfectly. Granted, this is a bottom-line unit and the base map is crap, but it'll get you from pt A to pt B or help you navigate back to port (and it's waterproof). In my case, it helps me avoid reserves! I got the Navionics Gold chart (on an SD card) and it's pretty sweet.

I have one, been on the ocean about 5 times with it. Easy to use. No extra software, but it gets you from A to B and back. I also marked the reserves. So far it seems to meet the needs I have with no problems.
