Can someone point me towards information on Yak camping in California.   I remember some High Sierra Lakes where the camping sites were accessible only by boat/Yak.   It would be fun to fish and have a base camp away from the busy camp grounds.

  Thanks for your time.

You can pretty much camp anywhere you like in the national forests as long as you obtain a fire or wilderness permit ahead of time.  Stop at a national forest ranger station for a permit on your way in.

I highly recommend Loon Lake in the Desolation Wilderness area up Hwy 50 about an hour above Placerville. Loon lake is one of my favorites for fishing/boat in camping, especially this time of year. Put in at the dock, secured parking area ($6. fee) and take your pick of some beautiful camsites and a few have pit toilets. The boat in camp grounds are on the East side of the lake and about a 2-3 mile paddle across. Beautiful place that is producing some nice trout...swimming is excellent too up until mid Oct.
