The rough vs. smooth jaw thing is a good confirming test, Vermilion being rough under the jaw & legal.

Here's a DFG link to canary ID:  http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/mspcont4.asp#canary

This page has a pdf flyer with canary & yellowey ID - 4th link down:  http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/fishid.asp

After you catch one, you'll know...very pretty fish and easy to identify compared to say, grass rockfish.

How rough is considered rough? Is the smooth like a slimy smooth. Sorry for the dumb question, I don't catch that many vermillion.

Valid question. It's kind of sandpaper-rough. The underside of a vermilion's jaw is scaly, so it has a grain & feels rough when rubbed forward, from tail to head.

Re: canary & yelloweye - yep, smooth is like fish-lip smooth...

I always look for a pale gray line that runs horizontal down the side of the canary.

call it a lateral line

Honestly Canary is pretty easy to tell vs Verms, the one that really close to Verm is the Yelloe Eye, you should pay attention on this specially if you fish up north.. I never caught one on San Mateo coast since I fish late 90's...

I agree with everything said except sometimes the canaries can be suprisingly red and some vermillion can be very light orange and not brick red like the illustration. I think the gray lateral line as well as the rough chin are the best way to tell if you don't have much experience.

Good luck and better safe than sorry!

Has anyone noticed that verms et al go pale right after you lip em?  I'm thinking they suffer some kind of discoloration being out of water after a tussle.  Hypoxia?

Or maybe they're just get skeered.

Yeah I noticed that last year kinda wierd...now just think if a GWS yanked u out of the water...might be a little color drain... :smt005 not funny i guess...I think if I even saw one, I'd probaly go through the spectrum of color changes remaining on white most likely... :shark
