OH I'm stirred up! When I found out about this site I thought these guys have got it. I'm 64 years old and I love to fish. I used to fish out of Santa Cruz a lot. I ran across a GWS about 18ft at New Years Island. It scrapped bottom of the the 16ft boat I was in from the side. I looked into it's eyes and IT looked back into mine. I saw so far back in time it was scary. I went to the bow of the boat to get a big rod used for Bill fish. The shark went the long way of the boat and scrapped again. I saw the tail past the motor and the snout under me past the bow. I thought this is all very exciting until I start looking for bait in the boat. I see 4 lingcod 20 -25 lbs my buddy and me. That's is all that would have been of any interest to this creature. At this point I pulled up the anchor and said "let's get out of here".
I have a HOBBIE tandem Mirage. Love it. But you can see a ain't going out in the briny deep in that. The bays interest me. Hali and stripes. I realized that I had over 24 hrs of enjoyment from this site when I started going in without sign-on. I'm sorry if I have vicariously hitched a ride with you guys when you tell YOUR tails from the briny deep.
By the the way I went out on the Russian River at Jenner with my girl friend this week end and trolled, ( repala and small plastic swim bait) just to see what was there. NO fish but the ff indicated that  piscados were there.

My suggestion is that the NCKA site remain open to all, but to interact (post or respond) membership be required. Some fee for membership should apply. I have no clue what, if anything it cost to run a site. It can"t be that much. Whats left could start a great party.

Don’t get too stirred up about this change, Willie. It really isn’t that big a deal. The requirement is minimal (10 posts) and the benefits are tremendous. Your post right here has information that is surely useful to some of the members—e.g., I love to hear stories about white sharks, especially local to the Monterey Bay area. And your report from the Russian is valuable to members too, even if you didn’t catch fish—sometimes a skunk report has just as much value as a fish-filled multimedia blast of videos, pics, etc.
So thanks for the info+report.

There's nothing wrong with that. And that's not really the empatus for the change [again, I am not speaking on anybody else's behalf, just my own opinion]. You enjoy reading other members' reports and so do I.

One benefit is that members (newbies and “OGs” alike) will be able to share information without concern that some “unscrupulous outsider” will use that information in an illegal or unethical way. Not every fisherman is quite as ethical as the majority of NCKA’s membership. In fact, there are lots of people out there who think it’s OK to poach. And I wouldn’t want to provide those scumbags with a resource that enables them to rape+pillage the very essence of our club = fish.
We’re all here because we love fish; some people love to catch em, some love to eat em, and some love to release em. We have a vested interest in this resource.
So let’s do what we can to protect our interests, while at the same time providing a place that fosters an open exchange of valuable kayak-fishing information.
And that is just 1 of the many benefits that this new change will provide.

I am a member of another club that went to a members-only format (but with far stricter rules), and the fishing reports on their site are far-and-away the most detailed, useful, honest that you’ll ever find. And that is because the members feel safe about sharing such proprietary information.
I guess the counter-argument is that “unscrupulous outsiders” won’t be deterred because they can simply post 10 times and have access to the Reports section. True. But it is one more step than most of those scumbags are willing to take. And less scumbags is good.

Welcome, Willie, and thanks for the cool encounter story!  I think that's exactly the intent behind the 10 post rule.

Sharing is a two way street. I have no problem with making the reports exclusive to those who participate. Especially blocking it from google or search engines.

Those who share can also reap the rewards. I't not like you have to pay, just play.

I think it will encourage more participation and less lurking. I personally know peoe on the site that are members who go online to find the hot bite but won't post their success so as to keep their spots secret, that in my opinion goes against the purpose of this site, so i applaud the change.

So you want to let anyone and everyone to be able to research the reports, but set up a membership fee for current members to share info?   :smt033

But seriously Willie, a couple shots of your boat in the "rigged" section or even a question about a setup on some random topic will quickly get you to the very obtainable status of being able to read the reports.  Nothing to get shaken or stirred about....

Jeez, get into one good argument on this site and your 10 post quota is done.  What's the big deal?
