I'm with ya, Abking.

I grew up fishing Walleye in MN, and watched many of our lakes there go from trophy producers to just average fish. My brother works for the MN DNR and is in charge of the Red Lake walleye re-population program. (Most of Red Lake is located on the Indian reservation and hence no limits or seasons for them. They literally fished it out.)

He did a lot of research over years with fish counts, seasons, slot limits etc., and the evidence was so compelling to him that he will abolutely not keep the big fish anymore. He keeps the medium fish for eating, and takes only photos of the big ones. The medium ones are better eating anyway.

Sadly, I rarely have to make that decision these days, so it's easy to say!  :smt009

Just a walleye fisherman from MN tryin' ta get salty!

Nice ling Eric. I just love looking down inside of a blue ling and checking the colors out. I got a blue ling at Linda Mar on saturday but the blue had some red color mixed in. :smt002 We were using live bait for stripers and this ling just smashed it. Bringing my sabiki from now on to the ocean.

Abking, Might not be that important to you, but your huge copper may have been a CA state record, eclipsing one caught off Pigeon Pt. in 1985.In fact, it was just shy of a 22.5" world record caught in Washington.According to my field guide, that's about as big as they get.

Maybe the "broken record" title works both ways. :smt003

Sin Coast was telling me of the pretty light Copper record.  I caught and photo'd an 11 pounder about 5 years ago.

That must have felt pretty good to release such a granddad of a fish. You got me rethinking my strategy.

Dang, I didn't realize the Copper rockfish record was so light (8# 3 oz).  I caught a 23 incher at Elk a few years ago that weighed 7.8 lbs on the tourney scale... so it seems 23 to 24 inches is the range.

The DFG caught+tagged a monster last year, inside Pt Lobos during a sampling/tagging session. It was over 11lbs, I think. The dorsal spines on a copper that big must be deadly big!
There are a lot of beatable CA records on the books. Take a look. But I've already talked enough about that, so I probably sound like a broken record breaking record right now....

Sorry for the T-Jack Eric!

There are no threadjacks in my world - there are only new attempts to eclipse the 15,000 view mark.   :smt003
