I would recommend the J-knot too.  I've been using it for the past year and find it easy to tie with a little practice, it's very strong, and I have had no knot failures using this knot.  I usually use a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader around 8' to 10' in length for rock fish jigging.  You can use a shorter leader, but you'll loose a little of the cushioning effect.  I started using the spectra braid lines about 2 years ago and I was amazed at how much more you can feel with it, particularly when jigging in deeper water.

I use the J knot. After using this knot exclusively on all my braind-mono connections since the beginning of the year I've really come to like it. My go to was always a uni-uni which was nice but not quite as strong as I wanted. Problem I saw was all the stress was right where the mono wrapped around the braid and made a 90 degree turn. When it got really tight under pressure it constricted the single wrap of mono and consistently broke right there. I'd looked for a new knot that made sense physically, was proven to hold well, and wasn't too hard to tie. What I came up with was the J Knot.

The nice thing about the J Knot is that it doesn't require the mono to make a 90 degree turn around the braid and create that constricting point. Instead it has a few turns that it takes together with the braid meaning the turns are more rounded out overall. It's really easy to tie and pretty low profile so slips through the guides nicely.

kinda surprised you didn't go with the Z knot.

Sledge,
I'm using 40 lb test Power Pro spectra fiber braid which has a 10 lb test diameter.  Use a lighter test leader so you can break it off if you get hung up in the rocks.

I'v been using the same but with 30lb PowerPro for the last 3 seasons. I'm sold on the braid.

Sledge,
Power Pro is good stuff.
As Mickfish mentioned, you would want to have a mono backing, so your reel will be at its capacity of line, not half full.  By having a larger diameter, each revolution of the spool will wind in more line.

Also, before you spool the spectra, try to have the mono (base) packed tight.  If spectra get's down to the mono, it can cut into it.  Also, pack your spectra very tight.  I do this by having some one apply a fair amount of pressure to the spool of spectra, as you wind it on to your reel.  If it's not tight, you may experience a backlash effect, even though you are vertically jigging.

Cheers,
Stuart

in case you go with the uni to uni, which I use, just make more wraps with the spectra side to keep from slipping.  I use 30# spectra and 20-30 # mono top shot.

spectra will allow you to feel the bottom WAY better than mono.  Just remember if you get hung up and cant get free, dont wrap your hand aroud the line and pull without a glove on.  Unless of course you are into cuts and pain :smt005

yeah last yr got couple of deep cuts just on mono...i can imagine braid ungloved... :smt009

well I think that settles it...I'm doing the backing like mickfish and Stuart suggested I've got 30 spectra...and 20 lb seagaur florocarbon...when I take my old line off my reel I'll use it for backing....
It will be great to "feel the bottom much more so than mono...FEEL the FISH BABY!!! Thanks ALL!!! :smt003 :smt003 Hell Yeah!!! Cant wait for Albion... :smt001
