Sean, It was 8-12 feet. I actually only used 4-6 oz. Once we got a little tide/current I switched to drifting. The water was so shallow there was a ton of plant growth on the bottom so trolling was a pain.

Thanks..BTDT

anti-seal? nope, anti-hali teeth!

i only had a cheap poly cord and like I said we had not bonked the fish...so he was very much in the ability to go ape**** and chew through my poly cord stringer.  i always carry a chain one along as well so I doubled up with it just in case he either came alive or chomped through the rope.

Sorry for the really late post.  I don't frequently post, but I know that I should do it more often. I guess that I can be deemed a semi-lurker!  :smt044

Last saturday was an amazing weekend.  Arrived a 8am to clear glass water on the bay with lots of bait fish jumping around.  There were a ton of boats trolling for halibut. NCKA was well represented. Landed the halibut at around 12:00pm after 4 hours on the water.
It was a quick slamoo! on my rod. I thought that I hit a rock or snagged some debris on the bottom.  I took a couple of turns on the rod before Mr. Hali made a couple of runs on me. Got him on the boat after a couple runs and noticed that the hook was barley hanging from his mouth. Once in the net -- Whammo! lights out....game over.

Over all it was a great day on the water.  See the pics below.

sean, i was using 10oz and the water was about 10 - 12 foot deep where I was trolling.

i use heavy sinkers when trolling because i want them to bang the bottom hard and kick up mud and debris to attract the halis.  i find that if the sinker is too light then it is too far behind the boat and it tends to drag on me and lose the sensitivity i need to ensure it is "bouncing" properly.

Great report, and way to give the AOTY '08 Champion some solid advice on trolling for butts.   :smt005
