stillwater south 9/13

Met up with Etienne and headed for stillwater.  Great water conditions but the fishing started out slow.  We kept pot holing our way past the tower house and around the second point.  As usual, Etienne outfished me on lings, but all were short.

I had a pet seal hang with me today, and the SOB kept taking the fish off my line.  I would hear him breathing near me.  I would get a hit, start reeling and suddenly the breathing sound is gone.  My rod then takes a BIG take down and about 2 seconds later the whole rod unloads.  My rig has a bent hook.

replace hook, repeat, same results.  third time I bring up just the head of a blue.  Just like the tuna at Guadalupe after a great white hit only in miniature.  I finally give up and head out to deep water, leaving sealboy or so I thought.  Had a nice take down, felt like a ling based on the surges.  Then again, bigger hit, rod unloads and the seal is back.

I paddle way out near a dive boat, hoping the seal decides to hang with the bubble crowd.  It must have worked cuz that was the last problem I had.  Ended the day with a decent stringer, one nice verm, a few kelps, blues, blacks.

The day ended with one of those DFG fish counter guys.  When he asked how many times I had been out this year, I laughed.  "lets see, how many weeks has rockfish season been open?"  Plus halibut hunting, dabbing, bait runs, perch...
x=(rockfish+dabs-early closure)+(halibut+derby-bad weather) x (weekends+ holidays -sick days.)  I dont know, lets just say 50.

I know that feeling. It's almost disturbing when you realise how many times you've been out!
