I'm new here. Caught this Johnny last weekend. Measured it off a kayak and read 24in. If it's not I know it sure is close. Wish I had a tape measure because I just seen the record on the dfg website saying 24in.!! Any help on a guess of the length and weight would be appreciated.

A 24 inch olive (or possibly yellowtail RF) is a nice fish but not that uncommon. They are slender fish with elongated bodies. I would estimate is at 4lbs. The party boats that frequent Big Sur often land sack-fulls of 4-6lb olive and YT rockies.
They are decent fighters and taste great. And a 24 incher is a nice catch from a kayak. I'd love to get a nice long olive or YT for AOTY. I'm curious what type of lure/bait it hit.
Thanks for the report+picture Hindseken!

Some fish are so common that people don't bother with records for them.

so the record ends up being something that could be beaten easily.

so it could be 24" and it could be a record, but my guess is that the general reaction is sNNNNNZZZZZZZZ.

I got some 22" ones this year in big sur. 4 identical ones in fact. from a school, caught 2 at a time on 3" white bass tubes. those also had no parasites which was very cool.

I measured those. On a previous trip I got one bigger caught alone, trolling.  I did not measure it.

One thing is for sure is that an olive above 20" on light tackle is a great fish.

But maybe somebody should bust that record and a few other low-hanging-fruit ones and get in the books from the yak.

Pretty sure its an olive. I looked again at the measurements on the kayak and I looked at it wrong somehow but It was pretty close. Wish I recorded the weight. I guess the record recorded is 5lbs. I seen 24in. somewhere and now I can't find it but it wasn't from the dfg website like I thought. I called the the guy from the dfg site and they estimated a 24in. to be 7lbs.  Oh well I was still wondering, you never know what you can get out there. That was my 1st olive too. It was from a sardine and at the bottom.
