Long slow day at MBK.

Met up with Sin Coast and naerob, launched around 8am. Trolled plastics out to Halibut Hotel. No hits and no signs of bait. Lots of fluffy weed in the water made trolling difficult. I cut out and headed across to Cannery Row. Man that's a long way from the hotel. Stopped and dropped a few times but the wind had come up and meant I was drifting at warp speed.

Finally made it to Cannery Row where the kelp is still thick but doesn't look too healthy? Something else is growing all over it? Or is that normal? Fished near the kelp, drifted past the kelp, fished on the kelp. Nothing. At. All. :smt017

Sin Coast joined me at Cannery Row ~1pm. We stuck it out till 2 then went in for some grub. I decided to head back out again, might as well make the drive from San Francisco worthwhile. I drifted, jigged, fishtraps, shrimp flies. Nothing. Decided I might as well stick the sabiki out and drift back in. I was starting to doze off as I drifted past the jetty (meclizine knocks me out) when finally the bait showed up. With a couple of nice sardines and a mackerel I decided to head back out to the Halibut Hotel. Trooched one feisty sardine around for a couple of hours. Was about to pack it in when the rod finally went boing boing. It was on for only seconds before popping off, taking the sardine with it. Well, at least the adrenaline got pumping.

Finally got off the water ~6pm. 10 hours for 1 bite. Still beats work anyday! Discovered a voicemail from my wife. In my hurry to get out at 0'dark.30 I guess I left out a big tub of catfish bait. The dog had eaten the whole thing.  :tard:

Way to stick with it NB. Next time head out to the red can and pick up some sand dabs for dinner. I have been skunked at MBK also so don't feel bad.

Fished MBK with naerob and Northern Boy on Friday. We concentrated on halibut all day with no luck. I trolled all the way to Seaside where there were 4 or 5 boats (was trolling with whole herring and/or illex squid). Only heard of one hali caught all day, estimated 6lbs. Drifted around the area with naerob while NB cut across to Cannery Row to try for rockies. The whole time dragging a squid-tipped sabiki, hoping for bait. But only got two hits on the sabiki and I’m pretty sure they were just smelt.

I ended up all the way out by Seaside, north or Tioga. The wind came up big time around 11 and it was a struggle to get back to the launch. Then I paddled out to Cannery row to try for rockies. Meanwhile avoiding the 100+ sailboats/sail-dingies that were competing in some sort of race. No luck on the rockies but I wasn’t really into it due to exhaustion from paddling my a$$ off. Came back in at 2, the wind was still blowing hard.

The highlight of my day was seeing 3 big fish (about 5-10lbs) swim directly under my yak as I paddled back from the beach hotel. They were cruising lazily in the opposite direction about 2 feet below the surface. I saw them and almost crapped my waders. Needless to say, I threw a swimbait like crazy for about 5 minutes. But the wind had blown me backwards by 400 yards so I gave up and continued my trek back to the launch.

I no longer believe in halibuts. Going to stick to rockies for now on LOL.

Hey Fish Master glad someone got into some fish!

Scott; I was looking at the red can from my perch in the kelp. I knew it would be more productive but I was ruined by my paddle across from the hotel. The red can looked a long way away after that.

e2g; my wife made me a deal; she would clean up the room, I had to clean up the dog. I should have just rigged up the dog with some 3/0's and taken her swimming at a local lake.

Northerboy 10 hrs on the water thats hardcore.  I had one bite from something small and it didn't stick.  I had to be off the water by 12:30 so I called it quits around 11:15 and it took me nearly an hour to get back to MBK from Seaside against the wind.
Nice fishing with you again Sincoast and nice to meet you Northerboy.
