most likely my last chance to fish from this santa cruz base station for this season, as I am busy sat, so me and ken the sc x factor (also free for a rare friday morning) busted down to the cap this morning for probably my last visit for the season.

conditions were mildly challenging and there was some yak carnage on display,  :smt002. apparently some of it is on video somewhere, rockymountainfishing.com I think.  however, I did not take any pics or bring my camera but my report is timely.

fishing was not as challenging as the conditions.

I kept a bare-ling, 4 verms (2 big, 2 small),  a small copper and released an underling (good fight!), 2 small olives, 2 average blues, a gopher and floated another gopher in a bit over an hour of fishing (we both had to get back for 4 pm business meetings) in some tall swells. not much wind in the window we fished. south early, stopped, then turned from the northwest. pretty dang windy coming home. I also had something big let go just below the boat, I assume a ling hitchhiker. I fished 120 to 90 feet. 120 was best, but the lings were with the olives in 105 feet.

tackle: took a page from the book of sackyak and used a white and pink 4.75oz pt wilson candlefish (long skinny lure, like a knife jig, but low tech) with one nose-mounted gamakatsu 3/0 510 assist hook and a black lefty's deceiver with a 2" glow hoochie over it for a teaser for all my fish. lings ate the iron. verms ate both. copper ate the iron. blues and olives ate the teaser. stupid gophers ate the hook on the iron, I think they like the red heatshrink on there,  :smt012

If you are fishing there tomorrow, it is pretty similar to last weekend except it was sunny and the nw wind got going earlier.

J out, yo.  :smt004  :smt003

Ken seems to feed half of SC with his stringer, but that still leaves the other half,  :smt002.

Fridays are always special no matter what. Sighting of the day was a 3'+ foot long fish jumping straight out of the water by 2' then shaking side to side. I thought salmon or steelhead (it was silver with blue green back) J replied thresher. An enjoyable exploration and all I lost was my hat on the landing!

Thanks for the report jmairey and thanks for the detailed setup and the water dept. I've always wanted to ask people when ever you guys fish on the ocean
how deep the water has to be to start catching fish, ling or rock fish.

aaaaaaahhhhh I love the smell of the cap in the morning! Nice report.

I wonder what that was jumping?  Definitely could've been a thresher.  I don't know what else would be that size & that aggressive?
