the weather looked so good yesterday!  colm and i launched at 6:30 am today.  it was cold, windy and wet (between mist and rain).  we decided to paddle up wind for a while so we would get at least one long drift.  we dropped our lines near that house that is north of bean.  the wind whipped, the whitecaps frothed, and the rain fell a little, at least there was no swell.  colm released a couple small ones, i kept a fair sized grass and a gopher, that was it.  we fished 20-60 ft, iron, swimbaits, flies, squid. we were back on land by 11 am.
i talked to alan tani a bit, he was there in his grady.

Chris,

A small group of us launched on Sat 6/28 to rough choppy and windy seas.  We went south because the previous week we (Sean, Ramon etc) went north.  A strong drift and the wind pushed us from south to north so we couldn't stay on any reef very long.  Lots of snags, jellyfish, seals and a few small fish.

We managed a few rockies, cabbies and one big (5 lb) copper.  The wind started picking up and wind blown water was coming over the side of the yaks so we paddled in.  Water temp was between 52 and 53.  Depth fished was from 20 to 60 feet.  The normal baits: swim baits, scampies tipped with squid and frozen sardines from Ranch 99.  The party boats and private boats were working the deeper water but it didn't appear they had much action.

Sandman, I was on the QoH @ Bean on Sat. You were right about it being pretty slow as far as rockies, the water is still just barely cracking 50*(even with the South Current that Sat), and the fish are acting accordingly. They were biting in the morning a bit, but just your average knuckle heads(Gophs, Chinas). Someone brought up an impressive 25 inch Black. I had to work hard for a limit. I will say the cabs were pretty active throughout the day(22 for the boat). I fished mostly plastic, but irons produced just as well. As far as Trophy Lings, well let's just say that 3rd place was a 18 lb'r. I let this guy borrow my light rod(he was frustrated with his gear). I tied some plastic to the line(same lure I was using the WHOLE DAY), and then he proceeded to catch a 28 lb Ling with it. That's when you know it's not your day. I was very happy for him even though a bit envious. Anyways, when we got back to the dock, they cleaned it. They ended up pulling out a legal 25 inch ling from it's belly. It was incredible. I think they will put it on you tube later this week:  http://fishingboat.com/report.html#date So there are some big ones in there. We were closer to the reef where Mooch and the gang were fihshing the day the yak got chewed on. About 40' deep. Very sticky reef, don't put on line you can't break from a yak. Good luck. -Lee

The Bean is always so intriguing because the diversity of that area is incredible: cabs, lings, and halibut. And they're all BIG!

Thanks everybody for the very detailed info. $$$

Lee, good to hear that the party boats are catching fish.  I feel for the captains/crew because this is their income and with the salmon season gone, its got to be tough.  If that ling was the jackpot fish I hope he split the $$ with you.

It's almost the annual anniversary of the visit from the landlord.  We should talk someone with a red Hobie with fins (ChuckE) into cruising around BH.  This would tell us if the landlord follows an annual migration and passes by BH as part of its path.  Any Hobie's want to volunteer in the interest of science?  OK, how about you want a new kayak?

I think the LandLord will visit 3.5 weeks late this year, like everything else.
