Scot Lucas is a former student of mine, who persevered to his current DFG Biologist.  He is also long-time staff at pelagic Shark Research Foundation, the Buccaneers of Marine Science.

this is a great opportunity for some free fishing, albeit non-yak, and a chance to contribute in a postive way towards sustainable fisheries and have fun aat the same time.  Serious, experienced people wanted only. They need people who will stick to the rail and catch fish, not sightseers.

Wanted:  Experienced Anglers

California Department of Fish and Game needs experienced anglers to participate in a collaborative study to gather information on species composition, abundance, movement, and catch rates of nearshore fishes in the Carmel Bay area.  There will  9 chartered fishing trips leaving from Monterey Fisherman’s Wharf between July and September, 2008.

All caught fish will be tagged and released (no retention). However, there is no cost to participate.

Dates are as follows:
July 14, 16, 17
August 4, 6, 7
September 2, 3, 5

∑ Meeting time is 5:30 am Fisherman’s Wharf Monterey
∑ Trips leave at 6:00 am sharp and return in the afternoon
∑ All gear including rods, reels, tackle, and bait will be provided

Trips fill up fast so if you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact:

I might join in on one of these trips.  I'm playing catch up now that my arm is healing....

1st thing I have to do is get out and get some fish and chips, prolly non-yak with Stago's, or a skiff rental out of Captiola, or maybe Capt. Jimmy later this week.

yes, I can fish again.

I hit Captiola Wharf on Saturday morning and was overjoyed to be able to cast mostly pain-free.

Take?  One guitarfish, though i helped net a legal flattie that mentor Mike Burkette put back in the water....22" even....waht a gent and sportsman he is!

Whoa! Allen that is really weird. I met Scot last week while eating lunch. The DFG offices are right next door to the building where I work. We started talking and exchanged a lot of info about rockfish in Carmel Bay. It was a great conversation. Well, he asked me to go on some of the Research trips and gave me a flyer w/info. He also showed me the new rockfish decompression device that he purchased, called the "Get Er Down." Pretty cool little invention. I will probably have to wait until August to go on the fishing trips because I just started a new job and the probationary period extends through July (yeah, I know TMI!).
Small world, huh?!

Yeah small world.  Glad you enjoyed the meeet.  Scot is one of the good guys for sure.

I hope to jump on the boat myself for one of these trips at least.  the boat is the Caroline out of Chris' Fishing Trips in Monterey, so the skipper is knowledgeable.  Great way to make sure you catch rockfish, good skipper and experienced anglers.  Way better than a passle of green graduate students, LOL.
