I am right there with you guys. I hope to take a few days off for the opener here in Santa Cruz (if the weather cooperates).
I've got a trip to SoCal coming up in a few weeks to fish the channel islands on the Apollo, so that should satisfy the saltwater fishing jones (but not the kayak jones) for a little while.

Kayak rockfishing hs totally spoiled me. My first 10 kayak fishing trips were all for rockfish...and each time I'd catch a ton of fish. After getting used to that kind of action, its hard to sit on a lake working my butt off just to catch 2 bass.
Let me know if you need rockfish before the opener ark. We'll go hit the coast and catch some rockies. I might go on Sunday.

Hi Patrick. I'm going shorefishing with a couple of friends this weekend. We should definitely get together for some rockfish from the shore before the opener.
I totally agree with you on the lake fishing thing. For some reason, I always have a hard time catching anything on a lake. Boo!

Quit trying to sneak onto the hookups page, PK - you're on probation!   :smt005

I feel like I should be there too!   :smt002

You've hit the nail on the head - spoiled by rockfish here too...

being that it does not open til may think of this scenario. you kayak out to a large kelp bed and anchor the kayak. slip on your fins and quietly lower yourself with mask and snorkel down into the kelp. pull back the bands on your speargun and float looking down into the kelp rooms to see rockfish schooling down below with the kelp rf just under the canopy in front of your face. the lings chasing the blue rf on the pinnacles and the cabezon sitting there thinking you cant see them.

all it takes is the right wetsuit, mask snorkel and fins and a speargun and you could be "fishing" off your kayak for rf year round. you dont need to dive deep or stay down for a long time to successfully hunt underwater. most guys i have been with on their first time bagged fish from the surface and they were thrilled.

the kayak is great for a lot of things. when it comes to using it as a dive / snorkeling platform there is nothing better. its quiet, can cruise over kelp easy and stores all your fish and gear.

for guys who miss catching rockfish from the kayak i recommend you to try diving. it opens up a whole new world and your season is now year round.

being underwater also brings new appreciation for terrain and the fish living in it. you learn how the terrain works and how to read structure and growth on it. where you see certain algae you find certain fish. also you learn how to bring the fish to you with sounds and movement.

Hahaha! I actually broke my 30-day ban earlier this week. But I think I made it like 15 days or so.
Ark, I am game for Sunday. Going bassin w/Yakuza on Sat. But I haven't been shore rockfishing for a few weeks and Sunday looks like great conditions.
PK

EDIT: Not going to Anderson on Sat because we just found out there is a huge bass tourney on Sat. Gonna have to go somewhere else.

But here's the lowdown on shore rockfishing for Sunday:
There is a very low tide of 0.2 at 1pm in Carmel. And the swell s/b small enough to allow us to get out pretty far on the rocks.
.SUN...NW 5 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 2 FT.
NW SWELL 4 TO 8 FT.
