Those stupid rockfish didn't even see me coming! They thought they were safe because they are in the ocean. And its March. And its windy+cold. And the waves are big.
But they were not safe. Because I was on a mission to catch a rockfish. And catch I did.

Hit the water around 10:30 with my new fishing buddy Gary. The tide was going out to a low of 0.30 at 1pm. Armed with some frozen squid and a bunch of hooks+sinkers we scrambled down the slippery rocks.

The first spot was windy+snaggy+skunky so we moved to a more-protected spot. That was the ticket beacuse we got out of the wind and the waves were smaller. Then my friend Damian met us at spot number 2.

Before my first cast at the new spot, I opened a can o Coors. I usually wait until AFTER catching a fish, but I also needed some nutrition and this was my breakfast. Similar to the way Popeye gets his power from spinach....I was re-energized!
First cast: FISH ON!
Pulled in a fat little cabezon. Only about 17 inches but it was bleeding so I kept it.

With the skunk off, I felt loose. Made a perfect cast out to the exact same place. Instantly felt the light taps from another fish and dropped the hammer. BAM! Another fish on.
This time a big kelp greenling.

I kept this one also. Because if you don't keep one every now-and-then, the other fish won't learn nothing. Lesson learned. Into the livewell he goes. Only about 16 inches but he'll make great fish tacos.

Those dang greenling flop all over the place and this one got my line tangled up. So I finished off the Coors and re-tied my rig. Took my time and gave the other guys a chance to catch a fish. I'm such a nice guy HA!
Slowly made my way back out towards the honey hole and layed down another perfect cast.
And hooked another fish! Another kelp greenling. Only about 14 inches. This one was just lip-hooked so it was released. Released to warn the other fish.

Next cast got hit but the fish came unbuttoned in the kelp. And that was it for the day. I had to get home early so I packed up and hit the road, satisfied with another day of teaching lessons to stupid rockfish.

Being an honorable sportsman is way more important than what you catch.

That spot sure looks familar. I'll have to talk with you about it at Shelter Cove. From your last couple of posts you must live very close to me.  :jawdropGood to see that someone is getting out and catching. Its been a while since I've caught a Cabbie, sure do miss those fish tacos.
