After putting in A LOT of hours at work lately, I'm finally getting a chance at a short  2-day vacation with my wife this weekend. We're headed to Monterey to visit the aquarium for my birthday. I'm really in need of a a good beer and a good meal so I'm wondering if anybody knows of a good bar/brewery and a good restaurant in the area (or a good brewpub that meets both criteria). We've never been to Monterey before and we're staying at a hotel about a mile from Cannery Row. Any good ideas?

Cannery Row has a lot of what your looking for. From the aquarium, there is a closed section of roadway on Cannery Row due to construction. I believe there are walkways to get through to the other side of the closed area though. Just on the other side of this construction there is a small mall on the ocean side. The Fish Hopper is located in the corner which you can see from the main street. Very good food and excellent ocean views. If you go there ask for a seat by a window. There is also a pub located right on the corner (Sly McFlys). There are several other restaurants on Cannery Row and Pubs as well including the Chart House located at the far end of Cannery Row (Excellent food and pub). Once your there you will see that everything is within a short walking distance. Let me know if you need more info.

Cool, thank you!  :smt003
The Chart House has been mentioned to me by a few people now so i think I'll look into that place as an option.

The Chart House

hmmm...I'm wondering if that's the same Chart House that closed down in Half Moon Bay (right on Montara Beach).

Could be. Chart House is a chain.

Peter B's behind the Portola Plaza, at the end of Alvarado St. Peter B's is the typical brewpub with good microbrews that are made there in the bldg. Food isn't the best, but above-average for sports bar food.
Alvarado St is kind of like the strip...lots of bars and places to eat.

I second the nomination for Fish Hopper, down on Cannery Row though. Very good food.
One of my favorite little bars is on Cannery Row too, Jersey's. Its kinda across from Sly McFly's and upstairs. Just look for the construction; its right near there. Best cheesesteaks around. And lots of TVs for sports.

Oh, and the other place you should try if you like smoked meats or BBQ is Willy's Smokehouse! I LOVE that place. It is on Cannery Row too, right next to Jersey's. Mmmmmmm....just thinking about the cornbread is making me hungry!

Jay, are you going to be fishing too?

Hmmm, didn't realize the Chart House is a chain. I don't have a problem with chain restaurants in general, but I usually prefer to stick with places that are more unique. I'll look into the Fish Hopper while we're there.

Sin Coast, I don't think I'll have the chance to fish on this trip. My job has had me working 12-14 hour days for the past 2 weeks and so I promised my wife that the cell phone and fishing gear would stay at home for this trip. She didn't ask me not to fish, but I thought it would be a wise WAF decision, and I believe that decision is paying off. I've been eying the Abu Revo Inshore and my wife has mentioned that I should go ahead and get "whatever fishing gear I want."  :smt003

We had a great meal and loved the ambiance and view at the Mission Ranch Restaurant owned by Clint Eastwood. Little pricey but well worth it. My wife's gaga over Stars :smt007. We have also had some goodtimes at his former Hogs Breath Inn just off the main drag in Carmel. We saw him there a couple of times once he bought everybody drinks. Very unusual below ground patio with bungalow bar pretty cool. Agree with the others about the Chart House but wasn't impressed with their Prime Rib but all the Fish dishes are the bomb, I always have a tough time choosing between the Crab encrusted Salmon with Coconut Ginger Rice :smt002 and the Spiced Yellow Fin.
You can always eat at Joel's favorite "Bubba Gumps" :smt013
