Several people have approached me and asked how to start ocean kayak fishing.  I am trying to make a YouTube video using the attached PowerPoint slides.  Most of you guys have a lot more experience and knowledge than I do.  Please give me your suggestions to make it better.  Thank you.

I’d recommend including the GB2 checklist. Mooch always said you need to learn how to kayak before adding fishing. Also, don’t discourage paddle craft vs pedal. Recommend trying many to find what suits.

Get comfortable in a kayak on flat water and move up from there. Boat wakes is one way to get used to riding over swells. Then get comfortable fishing on the flat water. Then wait for calm days on the ocean with lots of experienced kayakers around to help you learn the ropes.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

as a newb, this speaks to me.  it was just a black hole of missing information to me.

off the top.  I like how you suggested I use my GPS.  clear old routes, waypoint the beach, then the second point out in the water after you cleared the rocks.

I like how as a rookie, you suggested i put all my hooks away on the launch and reentry, just in case i go over and get wrapped.  I suspect it is less exciting with hooks put away safely.

Scissors > Knife for the newb.\

How to pee (needed to be said)..I am a kayaker from years of freshwater.  the bucking ocean was a whole other type event.

fish management.  treating the fish with respect and eating it is paramount.  how to keep it fresh, bleed it, store in on board, etc.

I'll come up with more. :D

For a beginner, harbor launches are less exciting than beach launches.

Ha ha! I remember the first time I met you at Pacifica when you tried launching from the middle of the beach.
I was thinking "Why is he launching there? He must really know what he's doing..."

The memories of the kayak landing on my leg, sand in reels, etc are priceless. Definitely did some things wrong, the most significant probably was fooling with my fish finder buttons right while launching and winding up with a sideways boat. Hard to correct after that.

Thankfully a wipeout while landing in Capitola took out the fish finder, so fewer distractions now.

100%.

Paul, your gameplan (as you explained to me) to clear a hard snag on the ocean floor is great.  add that!!!

That's one way to eliminate distractions...
