Craftsmen's Corner / Hobie Fishfinder Battery Upgrade
« on: August 29, 2019, 08:34:19 AM »
It was time to replace the battery after noticing I was only getting 3 hours of use out of my 12V 9AH Gel Cell battery that came with my Hobie Fishfinder Kit. On a full charge the voltage topped off at 12.1V! The thing about these battery’s is that they don’t like to be discharged and my Lowrance Elite 5 TI drew 1.2A, virtually damaging the cells by running them dry on every outing.

The solution: Buy a bigger battery! But the downside is you would have to carry the additional weight. So even better, buy a Lithium Iron Phosphate “LiFePO4.” Not only lighter but they don’t mind being completely discharged!

Time to salvage the cover and connector using a flat blade:

Great job Hobie! :smt011

Now let’s clean up those wires and remove the plastic covers so we can use them on the new battery:

Use a good flexible glue for the connectors and let’s fill up those covers:

Make sure the opening is completely sealed off to prevent corrosion and then clean off any excess:

Finally let the glue dry for 24hrs and install in the existing Hobie tray.

I opted for the 12AH to give myself ample time to enjoy using my Fishfinder. It’s wider so it won’t snap into place but nothing a bungee cord can’t fix.

Another added benefit is that lithium battery’s can be mounted on its side if you want to avoid the wires being pulled by the battery tray:

Here are the specs from the battery app and the voltage from the Fishfinder:

This lithium battery cost $79.00 and works with the existing Hobie charger. At the price of just $9 more than the Hobie replacement battery and a 5 year warranty, it was a no brainer. I hope this helps anyone out there looking to replace or upgrade their existing Hobie battery kit. :smt006

I believe you're referring to the "Miss Anita." That boat took on water was lost on 6/23/2018 during a short trip to the crabbing grounds.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: NRS Chinook PFD

I got the NRS chinook 20% off as stated above. If the VHF pocket is a deal breaker, consider using the VHF clip and attach the VHF it to the shoulder strap. That's what I did. Its out of the way and still accessible if needed.

General Talk / Re: Singapore fishing?
« on: February 25, 2019, 08:18:34 AM »
I spent my last vacation in downtown Singapore and there was absolutely no fishing in the bays but some of the best food i've ever had. They did it right to confine the littering issue from fishing and make local pools for locals to fish in. It was literally the cleanest city i've ever visited.

Singapore has a lot to offer and thrives on tourism. I stayed at Hotel G ($80/night) and they gave me my own cell phone with free data and free international calling! There's a lot of high end stores but the food and transportation is cheap. Uber everywhere! and you must try the famous Michelin rated 328 Katang Laksa. Just thinking of it... :drool

Introductions / Re: New"ish" Member- Vallejo
« on: January 12, 2019, 08:40:12 PM »
Glad to have you around Chris! It sounds like you have a lot figured out already, where and what do like to fish for?

Thank. I still have a lot to learn though. Offshore I’m big on salmon and dungies. Inland I like to catch and release stripers. Looking to get into halibut in the bay and rock fishing during the opener.

Introductions / New"ish" Member- Vallejo
« on: January 11, 2019, 12:17:36 PM »
Well, this is 4 years past due. Born and raised in Vallejo, I've fished since I can remember but I'm still fresh to the kayak scene. I use to own a Tarpon 140 but then sold it for my Gregor to take my buddy's out fishing with me. 4 years later and now I finally got the kayak I always wanted. Safety was first on my list so I picked up the appropriate attire and equipment, just waiting for some good weather to help get rid of this itch. Looking forward to meeting some of you on the water. LETS GO SLAY SOME FISH!

General Fishing Tips / ABU Garcia Veritas 2.0 Top Section
« on: August 06, 2015, 09:23:21 AM »
Hey guys,

So I recently lost the top section of my Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 rod while out on the water. Damn thing went overboard and went straight to depths of Davey Jones' Locker :smt011. I called ABU and put in a claim and within a week, I received a whole new rod :smt007. Now here is my dilemma:

What do I do with the bottom section of my older rod?
I tried calling Abu to purchase a new top section but they said that they don't carry spare sections of the rod to try to match them. They referred me to Jann's Netcraft and Mudhole but had no luck with them either. Would hate to just have to use it as a nice looking Beatstick. :smt044
Any Suggestions?

I picked up a 2011, in Nov. 2012.  Might be looking at a 2015 so my 2011 (used ~5x) might become available complete with tramps, rod holders & lowrance HDI ready setup.  Kept on a trailer with Hobie craddles.  Trailer NOT included though.

Tandem? :smt001

CC&K is California Canoe and Kayak in Oakland. I was searching for a AI last month and CC&K had the best prices on new and used demos.

I looked at two used AI's and found this thread useful:

And this one shows the changes through the years.

Thanks for shining light on the topic. Ill be reviewing it for the next few days.  :smt001

Whats your budget?

3k range for a tandem. I found an AI for 2k and a TI with a trailer for 3.5k. Far drive though.

How strong are you?!  :smt002

I've seen the used TIs for ~5k now and then on CL.
Fairly strong. 175 and work out 5 days a week. I'm focused on the Tandem now  :smt007
