Not a big fan of party boats but I have a friend who wants to do an ocean trip and won't step foot on any vessel less than about 25 ft.
Any recommendations for boats/captains that at least try not to leave a debris field of floating throw-backs and are otherwise reputable?

Salmon Queen (Capt Shim) at Emeryville has quite reputation they are doing RockCod Lingcod and if they still have enough time they'll do a quick drift for Hali and Stripers, they are a little expensive about 85 bucks, If you go to HMB Queen of Hearts (Capt Bob) Specialize in Salt Water Light Tackle, they are Cheaper 69 weekends 65 on weekedays check the link for further info  :smt002

I've been on the queen of hearts. Good crew and customers. I have also been on the tigerfish. Good but its a bit of a good 'ol boy network. Not that they were rude but had a diff vibe. I am sure I have pissed someone off with that comment. No ill will intended. Just an observation

I'd really recommend the Morningstar, they're a bit less macho than the other boats I've been on. They usually stick in the Bay for Halipers but do rockfish trips every now and then. They run out of Loch Lomond.

The guys at Emeryville sportfishing have always been pretty decent as well. I spent my bachelor party on the New Salmon Queen and Capt Shim was first out the dock (at 5) and last back in (at 5). I haven't been on any of the Berkeley fleet.

The only one I would definitely avoid is the New Sea Angler out of Bodega.

Thanks for the feedback. My dad sometimes goes for halibut on the New Huck Finn out of Emeryville with Capt Jay Yokomizu - seems decent (& not that I don't respect my dad's opinion...) but I'd like to hear other opinions if anyone here has experience on that boat, esp outside the bay.

Live bait potluck on the New Huck Finn or the New Salmon Queen, quality skippers and they always have top notch crew too. They will work their @ss off to get you on quality fish and always a full day of fishing.  I've been on some boats that are content to park you on a school of blues to fill the sacks so they're not burnin fuel and come home early.

I've fished with Jay many times he runs a good boat and catches fish but after reading this letter :smt013 I wouldn't ever give him my business or recommended him but hey you can always talk about Samantha Murry if the fishing is slow.

I second that. My brother -in -law used to go on the golden eye2000 and we spread my Dads ashes from the Blue Runner out of Sausalito. This boat is so clean you wont believe it. First class all the way.

Craig I went on a Blue Runner salmon trip with a friends Company and the boat was spotless and they actually bled and iced down the fish never seen that before but then again it had been years since I went on a Cattle boat

All the mentioned boats are good. Shim definitely fishes harder than most. I've watched the sun go down at the Islands before on his boat. Other good captains are Dennis Baxter on the New Captain Pete in Oyster Point for halibut and stripers.

A little more expensive but Captain Colin of the New Mary S out of HMB is also very good and only takes out five at a time so it might be nice for a newbie. Also the Hulicat in HMB tends to be less crowded and is an awesome fisherman.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

WTF!!!  :smt011
I was all ready to recommend him to my friend but this throws a big wrench in those gears. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Thanks also for the other recommendations.

I'll never fish on the Tigerfish until I know why the skipper's previous boat sank several years ago.

The tigerfish is a good boat - it was formerly the Makaira from Santa Cruz. It has recently been overhauled, check their website for details.

His first boat that sank was junky.  It was formerly the Taku.  If you've seen it you probably wouldn't want to set foot on it.  Probably purchased it very cheap and hoped to upgrade it, but you can only go so far when you start out so low.

Good experiences withe Queen of Hearts - HMB.

Also, highly recommend Jay Lopes of RightHook Sportfishing, 6 people or less limit, fun to fish with, works hard and can flat-out fish.
