Cool report dpshim!
Those perch look like a lot of fun.
I like the "After patiently playing with the fish..." line. It's something I still need to learn, or have forgotten, in the quest for AOTY points. :smt005
Hope to fish with you soon, I need a greenling, any of those over at the MBK area? :smt003

Sounds fun!  Reading this made me remember the joys of perch fishing in Humboldt Bay.  Nice kelpfish too!  How deep is it around that jetty Daniel?

The end of the jetty area drops easily to 45' down, but I noticed the average depth of that jetty is anywhere from 15'-25'. The jetty rocks drop at a pretty steep slope, so casting far isn't necessary. It's better to cast toward the rocks and allow the bait to bounce down from the rocks with the pendulum momentum :D

I, too, am still learning to be patient :) There are times I catch myself trying to horse a fish out and realize that I need to kick back lol!

In regards to AOTY, there are NO greenlings whatsoever here at MBK :P (Just kidding Tony). All kidding aside, greenlings are found throughout MBay, biggest ones I caught here pushed very clsoe to 18". They're out here, best bet for them is to fish the shallow waters where there are lotsa rocky/kelpy structure.

17-inch is not a giant.

Do they mean Giant Kelp or Giant Fish?

Howard, I safely let that kelpfish go after I snapped a quick pic :) My motto is "if you don't know what it is, let it go." Ya never wanna get caught/busted for "not knowing."

From the quick google search, this fish is called Giant kelpfish, "Heterostichus rostratus". You're right Etienne, 17" isn't giant since they grow to be 24". But I never saw a kelpfish that big personally before  :smt003

Nice report Dan. Thanks man.
There should be a kelpfish category in AOTY next year.

Hi Daniel,

Glad to hear that you got out on the water.  Sounds like you had a blast.  I'll have to work on getting a weekday off so we can fish together before the season is over.  Thanks for the great story and pictures!

Michael
